The 77 tones of small arms including some 3m rounds seems to have been ordered by the ministry of defense in Harare from Beijing three days after the Zimbabwe election. Just enough time to realise the election had been lost and come up with what looks like a bloody back-up plan to hold onto power?
Thankfully the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union have decided to act and refused to unload the ship or move the cargo by road. Lets hope they are successful in stopping this consignment reaching its destination.

Wow this is a huge crossover news story.
People have been protesting the Olympic torch because of human rights offenses perpetrated by China.
and the Zimbabwe elections have been disputed, because of Mugabe's tyranny.
Now the two countries meet.
Scary.
But this kind of crossover reminds me of the time that the cast of Empty Nest appeared on Golden Girls, during a hurricane.

That's pretty amazing and gutsy that a workers union in South Africa is standing up against this move by Mugabe. They would do it, but the South African government would not (though I do see the political risk)? Seems a little messed up that these dock workers are having to put themselves in the middle of this, but pretty awesome that they're willing to take such a principled (and risky) stand.
-
Great, china is already beginning to take over the role of the US in third world nations. Fan-frikkin-tastic.
-
the dock workers that refuse to load weapons upon their continent deserve an applause.
-
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has denounced the opposition and former colonial power Britain in his first speech since the disputed elections.
"Down with thieves who want to steal our country," he told crowds marking 28 years of independence.
The outcome of the presidential poll is unclear but the high court has rejected an opposition bid to stop a recount.

Where was the outrage when we were giving arms to Chile and Iraq in the 80s? China is no worse than the other superpowers.

Why does this not surprise me? Why does this scare the freakin' crap out of me? Good for those who refused to unload! Where's the UN? or somebody? anybody?!
-
Hurrah for those dock workers!!! Indeed this is a step in the right direction. Fuel for the powderkeg that is already there..I am hoping that the ship is turned around with its cargo intact, send them packing!!

I don't think the UN is going to intervene unless they grow a pair in between their legs

How can we condemn China when we have been doing the same thing, all over the world, (South America, Asia, the Mideast )for years? I am amazed at the workers for having this huge amount of courage. I would be afraid.
In order to make a true impact the United States must stop selling arms also. China is following our lead. -
America dose the same thing. What do you think happens when we just up and abandoned an area we so called were helping? we dont ship all the weapons back with us because the truth is, it's just cheaper to make new ones then to carry them back with us.
-
OK, lets blame America for the evil China does,
WOW !!!!!
This a genious approach.
How come, I did not tink of it earlier.
-
Great Britain is now the World's largest exporter of arms. China is neck deep in African politics. However, China will not be as forgiving as the West when betrayed!
-
Then we wonder why these people are killing each other. I can hear England and China says: Hey, we are not the exterminators, we just provide them the toys! Now about the children and poverty...
