Sen. John McCain proposed Wednesday to dramatically increase America's commitment to nuclear power, calling for a crash program to build 45 reactors by 2030 and a long-term goal of building 100 such plants across the country.

On the second day of a campaign swing devoted to energy security, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee also committed to spending $2 billion a year for research and development "to make clean coal a reality" in an effort to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil.

McCain has long been a proponent of nuclear power. But his speech here included unabashed support for an energy source and technology that has been suspect in many communities since the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, the most serious commercial nuclear accident in U.S. history.

No nuclear power plant has been built in America in more than 30 years, and few U.S. companies have invested in the technology to build new plants. The nation draws about 20% of its electricity from 104 working commercial reactors, but many are nearing the end of the operating period allowed by their licenses.

"We will need to recover all the knowledge and skills that have been lost over three stagnant decades in a highly technical field," McCain told a forum at Missouri State University.

Missouri is considered a key battleground in the fall election, and the Arizona senator promised to return often to campaign in coming months. About two dozen antiwar protesters greeted his arrival here, and police escorted one youth from the auditorium after he loudly interrupted the speech.

McCain did not explain how he would dispose of the radioactive waste from the dozens of new reactors he proposed, or how he would deal with the intense political passions the issue generates.

John McCain, just another shill for industries trying to sell us a product as green that is far from it. And the truly frustrating part of all of this is that Barack Obama essentially shares the same viewpoint on nuclear being part of the solution as well as touting "clean coal." Forty five plants by 2030 is a death sentence for this environment. Notice McCain does not mention how long it would take to build these monstrosities or the CO2 and other gases expended in mining the uranium that will poison our land, waterways, and citizens in the process. Just ask Native Americans in New Mexico and Nevada about that.

And he doesn't tell us how he plans to do away with the toxic waste that is radioactive for thousands of years... nor does he tell us the BILLIONS that it would cost to build these monstrosities all while the Arctic and Greenland continue to melt. Nuclear is not the solution. It is simply a way for corporate sponsors of political candidates to keep the status quo and to continue to deflle this planet for profit under the guise of caring about it.

And once these plants were built they would also be mini nuclear bombs just waiting to be hit. No wonder so many agree with McCain in the Congress about this. This is also tied to the nuclear posture review and their attempt to look peaceful while continuing to build nuclear weapons. And it is sad because if the Democratic party actually had a candidate who had courage enough to come out against nuclear and coal they might actually look like a party that wants change. I can't even say I would vote for one over the other on this because they are basically the same. So it is the people who will have to look beyond their political partisanship to see the truth and hold all of their feet to the fire on this. Nuclear and clean coal are scams that need to be outted for what they are, and those politicians touting them regardless of party need to know that people will no longer tolerate business as usual.

This is a link to a petition that was handed into the EU last year. So when you read that nuclear power is popular in Europe, don't believe it. It may be popular in regards to governments wanting it as is the case here, but I believe many people are against it because they know how toxic and dangerous it really is.

Ten reasons why we don't need to build more nuclear power plants and why they can't address climate change.

Where do you suggest we get our electricity from? You don't want any more coal plants, we cant dam any more rivers because that would cause to much impact to the environment, no nuclear, nobody wants wind farms in their back yard. So what is your suggestion? You can slam McCain all you want but its obvious he is the only one with practical ideas. Obama is selling you what you want to hear it doesn't matter if it works or not. Maby we should all go back to living without electricity

oh yeah by the way co2 is not causing global warming its the sun. More and more scientists are figuring that out now. How long do you think you can keep man made global warming alive? Its been damn cold in the north this year!!!!!!!!!

By bringing SOLAR, WIND, GEOTHERMAL and other energy sources forward without the interference of oil companies and other lobbies that DELIBERATELY use their $$$$$$$$$$$ and political clout to keep them down, as we wean ourselves off these dirty, toxic CANCER CAUSING sources state by state. And you're damn right I can slam McCain for being a SELLOUT to the environment just like Obama has shown he is on this issue of nuclear and "clean coal." How many dead people are good enough for you for us to keep this going?

The sun? LOL. Yes, and the Earth is the center of the universe. Please, educate yourself instead of just watching Glenn Beck and the other buffoons who pass that BS on. Climate change is not just about warm temperatures.

And "oh yeah" this isn't just about climate change, but the TOXIFICATION OF THIS PLANET. If you don't think coal and nuclear do that, you are brainwashed beyond all hope.

I haven't seen any people die because of a coal plant. I think you are misinformed we have plenty of coal. I and most of America don't buy into the hysteria spread by people that want to bring our economy to a halt. I am all for wind solar and other energy if it is cheaper. A majority of the country agrees with me.

The sun is what warms the planet it is that big orange thing in the sky if you look up tomorrow you will see it and if you go outside you will feel its warmth. I never watch Glenn Beck but I have herd of him.

i dont know where they plan on building these nuke plants but i dont want to live within 1000 miles from them. im sure i already do. does anyone know where the nuke plants are currently located

I mean, I understand how this could be a very poisonous thing for our environment, but it also has the potential to help. We're steadily running out of fossil fuels, and if we can't find other ways to generate power, we're sunk. With society the way it is today, we wouldn't be able to last any lengthy amount of time without electricity, and while McCain's proposition isn't nearly perfect, I appreciate that someone is at least trying to find solutions.

Just because someone doesn't agree with your radical ideas they need to be educated. We have burned coal for 150 years or so maybe longer and were still hear. Why the sudden need to change? I think you have been listening to Al Gore. Who by the way is profiting big time off this whole global warming scare while living a extravagant life style. What a hypocrite.

i found a map of the nukes plants in the usa.
they are all over the east coast and luckily there are none in my state of montana

Did we need the stock photo of 55-gallon drums? People aren't dumping them anymore, and besides, nuclear waste isn't stored in drums.

People will do a better job making real change if they leave out the exaggerations. Otherwise, they just end up proving Rush Limbaugh right. And we wouldn't want that would we?

Pollutants from coal based electricity generation kill 170,000 people annually.

And we already know the potential of a nuclear meltdown or terrorist attack. You know, for people who seem to care about protecting us from the 'evildoers' they sure don't seem to be able to connect the dots on national security and its corrolation to clean safe energy.

Yes, we did need it. Polluton still exists, doesn't it? And I don't give a fart in space about Rush Limbaugh.

I'm not totally against pursuing the nuclear option to some degree. I mean, if we intend on using anywhere near the amount of energy that we currently do then we'll have to rely on it a little. Solar is an excellent option. Hopefully, MIT's recent developments with fusion energy can produce something sooner rather than later.

Valcent has also been working on a pretty amazing vertical bioreactor that turns algae into biofuel by using very little water in a very small area. Could be promising.

You only need one reason to say NO to nuclear: CANCER.

    Remember Chernobyl?

Nuclear energy is not worth the risk of millions of people dying of horrible cancers because of an accident or a terrorist attack on a nuclear power plant.

Nuclear power plants also use large amounts of water for cooling. How the hell do people propose to have that with FORTY FIVE new plants if climate change, waste, mismanagement, overpopulation and pollution of water sources in this country are already contributing to almost 50% of this country being in some form of drought? And what about the types of storms we have seen causing flooding in Iowa? I have never seen one nuclear plant that was not near a body of water, and droughts can pose a severe problem by causing the source of cooling water to run out. That already happened in France in 2005 during the mega heatwave that killed 35,000 people. Nuclear plants had to be shut down. They are not viable in the changing world we now live in. Period.

Hawkmang: That is why the crux of this is getting people to understand that they need to stop being so damned selfish and wasteful and thinking these antiquated toxic technologies will pick up the slack for them. Why can't people be responsible and conserve? Why can't people learn to not use as much energy as they do now?

There is also NO reason why we cannot build solar arrays in the Mojave Desert and in other locations that could serve thousands of homes and businesses WITHOUT nuclear radiation waste storage problems, toxic pollution, mismanagement of plants, lack of qualified staff, and security problems. And solar will and is opening an entire new field of green jobs that will help lift people out of poverty in also working to give their children a more sustainable planet. Why are people who talk change so afraid to really change when that change is so much better than the crap they already have that has contributed so much of the cancer and disease we see on this planet?

The reason is clear why McCain, and even Obama want nuclear: MONEY and POWER. Obama already loosened policing standards in Illinois for his contributor Exelon... is MONEY more important than saving people from cancer? Nuclear power can NEVER be safe and those in Washington DC telling us it can will only look like either one of two things: a shill for the industry, or a political partisan refusing to see the big picture because their wallet is blocking it.

It's sad that both Obama and McCain are talking nuclear energy. Come visit Grants, New Mexico. We're the Uranium Capital of the World, where much of the cold war uranium was mined. The mining companies have rushed back to try and take more uranium from us, but happily citizens took a stand and made our uranium rich mountain a protected Cultural Property. While the Navajos are fighting uranium mining, some other tribes want to see the mining return despite the destruction of their land and high cancer rates from the last time the mining companies came here. Check out our documentary on this "Uranium: Boom, Bust and Back Again"... one tribal member lost her job for speaking to us (which I feel terrible about). It's a hot issue here.

The problem with this country's energy policy is that it is determined, in large part, by special interests with a lot of money and power. Oil, Coal and Nuclear.

Cleaner options like wind and solar get lip service from politicians but there is no real committment. If there were a policy committment to these, we could make it happen.

Even without this, in the next 7 - 10 years solar will become much much more affordable and an economically vialble alternative to conventional energy. That timeline would be shorter with some political leadership. But I don't see that right now from either candidate.

fuck it being 'colder' in the cold states, duh....its hot as hell likes its never been hot b4, and you cant tell me that the times when the seasons have come have shifted "somehow"...its snowed it ATL GA this year in Feb, March, then right after had 3 cases of tornados..in florida it didnt even get cold AT ALL but 2 days of one month, and that month was in march. if you think that adding polutants is the air is helping..?! then your the one hurting. simple places like Whole Foods Market, a organic and all natural grocery store, is even providing easy answers, they provide you with Wind Farm Cedits, so instead of your house can be powered by Wind but still be charged by the electricity provider because they will use wind credits...any HOUSEHOLD can use this, including any big based business...it would cut down all the nucluar plants but they will still be getting paid for cheaper and using another sourse of power, its a win win...when u r determined to find another way, there always seems to be one. o like in New Mexico, where someone found how to make pertrolum out of lake algea, who wouldve known, unless he was determind. i dont know about u, but i like Earth, i want to take care of it the right way instead of (finding other means to live; Mars, and BS like that) harming it now then figuring it out later.

he's making no sense at all. 45 reactors? Didn't they have a problem dealing with nuclear watse that poisoned and killed all life that encountered it? Why dont they just wait for the new fusion reactor to be finished?
