No more Starbucks? Coffee company closes 600 stores in the US

Is the Starbucks era coming to an end? As more and more Starbucks stores open all over the U.K., the gigantic coffee company has announced that it is closing 600 underperforming stores all over the US. Furthermore, less than 200 new company operated stores will be opened in 2009.

Do you think Starbuck's time has come and gone? If so, what will come next?

  • The Starbucks era is just getting started...

Limit the availability of what people want.....

Now the remaining stores will be overperforming...

    Brilliant!

Americans aren't giving up their coffee..

They'll cry about $4 gas, but $4 coffee, nah...

  • I hope the Sbucks era is over. I worked there when I was first out of college for the health care benefits...but sadly they were a lot easier to lose than they were to get or to keep. Very irritating. Plus, they talk a good game - calling employees partners, benefits for part time workers (if you can get 'em and keep 'em...), etc., but in reality, they don't treat their workers very well, as I learned firsthand unfortunately.

They do make a good cup of coffee though.

  • They're probably closing all the stores in the same parking lots as other stores.

600 Starbucks closing? Damn now there will only be 9,999,400 to choose from. I going to have to walk a whole block now. If this means the end of Starbucks I might just have to go back to smoking crack.

  • Starbucks isn't over. But, they did do a poor job of store location. They over saturated their own market.

    I can get to 2 within 5-10 minutes. That's a bit much.

There are 3 in a local shopping complex alone. Barnes and Noble, Target, and a stand alone.

  • I went to college( Northern Michigan University) with Howard Schultz, the founder. He was the 4 string QB, before quiting , for his own good. He had a pretty girlfriend, a cheerleader named Elaine. They were a nice couple. I'm happy for his success. He'll do greater than Starbuchs. Watch.

  • no. I dont think Starbucks is going anywhere anytime soon Americans need it to much. maybe there just making a different business approach. There are Starkbucks on every street conner in every major city in the U.S maybe they just need to cut back a little.

  • Just another obstacle in the business world, they'll be fine.

  • I think Starbucks is too much of a corporate giant to be thwarted by just shutting 600 stores. Their customers are loyal to the point of addiction; I'm sure the Starbucks following will still be strong.

As a native Seattleite, it's always cool to say that Starbucks is from my hometown haha hooray!

  • My friend, the starbucks addict, is probably crying about the fact that he'll have to walk an extra few blocks to get his caffeinated slop.
  • i hope they close more. i only go to independent coffee shops.

  • There are three on the same corner here. I'm sure they are not closing. There are four within the a mile of one another at another location and I bet they don't close.

I don't think the major cities are going to lose any.....I have never been to a slow Starbucks here and I've been to many.

  • Nothing againts Starbucks but I'd rather support my local Mom and Pop coffee shop. I have no problem with the store closing. I just hope the laid off employees will find jobs as soon as possible. It's not easy being jobless in this unstable economy.

  • Thank god! Starbucks and their disgusting, overpriced coffee need to get out of here!

    Supply and Demand....the marketplace

  • This definitely shows a BIG problem in the United State's economy if one of its biggest corporations is packing up and moving out. This tells the United States consumer that their money is not that important to big multi-billion dollar corporations; thus, the big corporations will be moving to more economic prosperous nations-- for example, European nations. The Euro is well above the dollar, and if big corporations such as Starbuck's want to stay filthy (yes filthy) rich, then they need currency that means something. Seeing that they can be billionaires in Europe, imagine what that would make them in the states considering the price of the Euro is nearly twice as much as the Dollar. Now there is some coffee for thoughts!

  • besides gas, america runs on starbucks. but i guess between a 4 dollar cup of coffee and 4 dollar gas. i can survive without the coffee,...
