Jack Nicholson's Joker was a blast. Heath Ledger's Joker is as dark and anarchic a figure as Randle McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the role that brought Nicholson his first Academy Award.
Ledger's performance in the Batman tale "The Dark Knight" is so remarkable that next January 22, the one-year anniversary of his death, he could become just the seventh actor in Oscar history to earn a posthumous nomination.

Why not? If his performance outshines any other's, he should win. Plain and simple.
-
If, and only if, his performance warrants such praise.
Don't give it to him simply because he died. -
Would he be the first dead person to win one?
-
Heath Ledger has done great things prior to this role that was never noticed by the Academy and this go around will only be noticed because he died and they want more viewership because their ratings drop because they nominated this most nonsense things that viewing public never sees.
It is NOT an honor if they do this. It's a disgusting attempt to profit off of his untimely death. If they read his interviews they would know that this role gave him his sleeping problem and it is not right to take something from someone else who is still alive, someone else who can actually appreciate the award.
He's dead. Giving a dead person an award is a waste. Who is going to accept it? His ex? She didn't even want to talk to the press about him. Why would she bother with an acceptance speech to people that never appreciated him prior?
This is a very bad idea. -
The answer is no.For the soul reason that the acadamy largely ignores movies in this genre. It would have to be awe inspiring to get their attention.

The previews sure make it seem like it could be possible, as he looks INSANE in the part! They're definitely playing his part up, hardly showing Christian Bale in any of the trailers...

Some say I look like Heath Ledger!
I could accept his award for him! Whatcha guys think? -
go to the theater, see the film first and then let's talk about his performance.
-
I just find it kinda sick how Warner Brothers is going to probably make a lot more money from this film because of his death.
-
Watch 5 minutes of it here. Looks pretty rad to me.

CHARMOSH, I don't think Ledger dying is going to have any effect at all on the film's performance. If anything, it could have had a chilling effect. But the fact is the reason this movie's going to kill at the box office is because it's going to be a great film, and not because Warner tried to capitalize on Ledger's untimely exit. I actually think they've been very respectful and careful in how they've marketed the film.

HOW MANY BATMANS DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE THEY KEEP REMAKING MOVIES AND ITS KILLING THE GOOD MOVIES

watch this comment being used hereTHEY WILL KEEP MAKING THEM UNTIL PEOPLE STOP GOING TO THEM, Pimp. "GOOD" MOVIES WILL ALWAYS BE MADE, THEY JUST WON'T BE POPULAR. THEY NEVER HAVE BEEN.
Actually, I bet this one is going to be pretty good. Not as good as all of the advanced hype would have us believe, but pretty good. And it's no surprise that Ledger is getting praised for this performance. He was a fine actor.
So, of course he COULD win an Oscar. But, as a longtime Oscar prognosticator, I think it's pretty unlikely. I think there's a decent chance of a nomination (if they hype proves accurate - I mean, almost no one has even SEEN the movie yet!), but actors in blockbuster-type movies (dead or alive) almost never win for those performances. -
I love Heath Ledger. NO doubt in my mind. His performance is going to be AWESOMe and if he wins, then that'd be sweet. It'll just make up for all the other movies he totally rocked in and didn't get enough acclaim for.

Hope not, sucks when people are worshipped after killing themselves. People wonder why moronic kids think suicide is glamorous...

If he deserves it and wins it then Iam sure a family member can except the award.

Heath Ledger ROCKS!
-
He has my vote, my first born and my first pair of air jordans
beaver!!! -
ok. the movie isn't even out yet. so why are we assuming that its even gonna be nominated. I mean, he is generally a good actor and I have no problem with people being posthumously recognized, but come on. have any of you even seen the movie yet?

If he's good at it, do it.
Although,......... this will be the worst batfilm ever, and the Joker was already done, perfectly.
It's not Heath's fault, but this movie should not have been made, or just shouldn't have Joker in it.
It pains me to say this, because I'm a Batfan (Batman tattoo included), but Hollywood has broken Batman's back. Who's with me? -
i haven't seen the movie, but from the previews and the reviews...he may well deserve it. it is still unbelievable that he died

Sure. His performance from an actors point of view is first class. But, we need to be careful not to glamorize his death.

Two reasons why he might.....
One ... we love dead people they embody our ideal memories so well and they will never be able to tarnish their image in the future.
Two.... He may have touched greatness and beleive it or not this is what scares people most. We are not afraid of failure as much as we fear success. Sad either way-

from the clips I've seen Heath Ledger's Joker looks genuinely scary and quite deranged, and looks quite close to the dark gothic origins of the very early comic books and the more recent graphic novels that have been coming out that have been pretty successful in the comic book community.

I agree that if he does get nominated, it should be because of an outstanding performance not because we are trying to honor his memory. Getting nominated for an outstanding performance isn't out of the question though; from the looks of the trailer it could be that he very well deserves one.

Prior to Batman Begins, I thought that, aside from the Keaton ones were good, and then they just got silly. So for a long time I didnt want to watch Batman Begins, but I was glad I did.
As a Chicagoan, maybe I'm a little biased (seeing GCPD squads tearing around the loop was way cool) but I think this one will be even better, not just because it basically made Ledger crazy, but because it looks to be a well made film.
Of course, judgment on a Ledger Oscar will have to be reserved until the movie actually comes out, but if his role warrants an Oscar, why not? -
He may be nominated, but there is no future revenue in dead actors. It would be an honor to be nominated, but the studios aren't going to give it to someone that won't bring in future blockbusters.
-
why shouldn't...infact they might even make a award named after him...."The Heath Ledger Award" - you only get if your dead, and were a good actor/actress....I think it would work...
-
I am SO excited and ready to see this movie. But if Heath Ledger won the award all I would want to know is why James Dean didn't win anything!
