Denmark is the happiest country in the world, according to the latest World Values Survey published by the United States National Science Foundation.
The annual study surveyed people in 97 countries to discover who is happiest. The survey asked people two simple questions about their happiness and their level of satisfaction with life.
Puerto Rico and Colombia completed the top three happiest nations. Zimbabwe was found to be the least happy, with Russia and Iraq also in the bottom 10.

The reason the US is not in there:
If one person is happy, another isn't happy because they are happy. It's kinda how we act. -
-
Not many melancholy Danes anymore?
-
It seems that Allah doesn't care...
-
I'm moving!!! I wonder where the U.S. is on the list.

Hamlet:
What have you, my good friends, deserv'd at the hands of
Fortune, that she sends you to prison hither?
Guildenstern:
Prison, my lord?
Hamlet:
Denmark's a prison.
Rosencrantz:
Then is the world one.
Hamlet:
A goodly one, in which there are many confines, wards, and
dungeons, Denmark being one o' th' worst.
Rosencrantz:
We think not so, my lord.
Hamlet:
Why then 'tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or
bad, but thinking makes it so. To me it is a prison.
Hamlet Act 2, scene 2, 239–251
I guess they've come a long way since Shakespeare huh? -
Of course they're the happiest. They don't have the trade deficit that the US has. I'll be smiling and very happy if I know I don't owe anybody money.

All the Danes I have met travelling and in the UK have been top people. They are very at ease with themselves and have a cracking sense of humour.
They can talk football and drink all day long, inc blokes as well ! -
russians are definitely miserable. atleast the ones i've met. and denmark is definitely an awesome place. so is all of scandanavia, despite the cold weather.

Most likely one of the contributing factors is their strict policy on citizenship.
yay for them. -
I thought it was Bhutan.. or Norway.. then Sigur Ros claimed it was Iceland... argh.
-
It's no surprise about the Danes but I'm curious that Colombia is in the top three! Beautiful country and the locals are loads of fun but it is one of the most violent places on Earth. Could there be some other reason for their enviable levels of mirth?

I can see Denmark as a very happy country, but how are Columbia and Puerto Rico in the top three?

Hans Christian Andersen would be so proud! Personally, I believe happiness is linked to humor and laughter. The Danes love to laugh their asses off every time a non Dane tries to say "rødgrød med fløde". Keep up the great work Denmark!!
