Hello my prettiez. If you love (to see or wear) make up as much as I do, this is good (GF, BFF, buddy, friend, whatever) information to share, as it is important to know what is hiding in these products that are so close to your skin and often not known or available to the public.

The rockstar blog of TheCoveted posted this awesome interview with Stacy Malkan, author of the book 'Not Just a Pretty Face. The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry'.

"Stacy Malkan is the Communications Director of Health Care Without Harm and co-founder of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
"All the major companies lined up at the hearing to complain that it’s too hard for them to get lead out of lipstick"
Q: Cosmetics are virtually unregulated in the United States. Meanwhile, in 2003 the European Union banned chemicals strongly linked to cancer, mutation, or birth defects from personal care products. Why are we so far behind?..."

  • Lipstick laced with lead.My mother and sister will definetly be shocked to hear this .I still can't believe lead is in these products that goes on your body or is close to your mouth. It must be cut out of the industry standars. Thanks Meligrosa good article.

  • Great stuff.
I'm for uncovering what these greedy companies want to slather on our bodies or want us to ingest in the name of profits.
I am like a canary in the cave..I think that is the metaphor.
I ate worse than any kid..grew up in a carnie life in the summers..lots of artificial preservatives and colors... and a few years before most on Current.
I got adult onset severe allergies and asthma. After looking for solutions with our faulty medical system for 2 1/2 years I found a smart doctor finally who diagnosed my problem as Salicylate intolerance..aka sodium benzoate . aka aspirin...eliminated that substance meticulously and many years later am problem free.
Most US doc don't care to uncover this type of solution because it cuts them out.

  • Malkan gets right to the point when she says that we must "reclaim" an administration which has, "...eviscerated, underfunded, demoralized and gutted", those agencies serving to warn and protect the public. The GWB pack has cut funding and staff and/or replaced leadership with old political allies with no prior experience leading to a widespread decay of the entire lobbyist-bloated US Government body.
Profit for the few at the health risk of the many.
"Reclaim" is a very good way to say what the public must do to protect future generations.

  • Replace toxic, mass-produced, over-packaged "beauty" products with natural oils like lavender, rosemary, lemon and tea tree oil and antibacterial and antiseptic solutions like vinegar and hydrogen peroxide.

You'll be healthier and look great.

  • You're right!
I still use some but try to use as much as I can right from the kitchen.
    ..tea tree oil is great.
the products we are putting on our dogs are just as bad..my dog is on a raw food diet and looks much healthier than most dogs her age.
she is 13 and has a shiny coat.
it is tricky sometimes and I have a certified Vet in our area who makes house calls and she says Chelsea looks great.

  • I stopped buying expensive, corporate, "beauty" products over a decade ago.

Jojoba and olive oil for moisturizing face and body.

Tea Tree Oil is a quick, natural cure for blemishes, fungi, cuts and abrasions.

Ingest 2 tbs., twice daily or Flax or Olive oil for great skin from the inside out. (Great for cracked heels). (The 135+ year old Turkish woman credited her long life to drinking a cup of olive oil daily.)

White Vinegar (10% solution diluted with water) and Hydrogen Peroxide are antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial. (Use for toner, cuts, scratches and blemishes.)

Add a cup of Vinegar to bath water to balance skin Ph and cut hard water.

Rosemary, Lavender and Lemon Oils for hair care. A few drops on palm drawn through hair substitutes for after shampoo conditioners and smells great.

Jeanne Rose's book at link has great recipes for beauty products to mix up at home with natural foods like advocado and milk and herbs like lavender and rosemary.

  • While you're replacing toxic beauty products with healthy, natural alternatives, consider also replacing toxic household cleaning products with natural alternatives you can make yourself at home for much less money.

  • On laundry day, consider using non-toxic laundry detergents.

Organic stains like blood and grease disappear with a few drops of castille soap and a splash of hydrogen peroxide.

Vinegar straight from the bottle for stubborn stains, diluted with water in the washing machine, works great.

Carbonated soda water cleans stains from wine.

Added bonus for using natural cleaners is eliminating packaging and greenhouse gas emissions from shipping cleaning products across the world.

Our family buys big jugs of White Vinegar and Apple Cider Vinegar, olive oil and big bags of baking soda.
The vinegar bottles can be cut in half and reused for a variety of household tasks. You can even keep some of them, get a vinegar starter and make your own vinegar in a few weeks, thus eliminating more trips to the grocery store.

  • I myself use Sheer Cover Mineral Foundation. It helps filter the suns rays which actually I could care less about. Also it's 100% pure and natural minerals. Yet, this might be great but it doesn't cover anything. It's worse than the makeup you purchase at the local Wal-mart. So, thank you, but I would rather put on the lead.

  • Daily lifestyle products often contain chemicals that may or may not be hazourdous, or are not seen as hazourdous at this point in time. products like ciggarets and asbestos were used frequently and were seen as unhazerdous untill the effects of the chemicals contained in them were discovered, cancorgens in these products (contained whitin the tar of ciggarets) caused cancer in people that came into contact with them. asbestos has been replaced with other building materials, and ciggarets are the target of many laws and legislations to reduce the affect on the public,
why this cannot be carried onto other harmfull products is beyond reason.

  • Go natural. It's the only way this little ball of dirt and water will survive.
