Obama vows to improve quality of life for Native Americans

Barak Obama has pledged a new era for Native Americans when he is elected president beginning with the honoring of long-ignored treaty obligations and the revamping of health care and education on reservations across the U.S. He said treaty commitments had the force of law and had to be the basis of decisions in Indian Country. Keep in mind that no president — either Democrat or Republican — has hitherto honored the treaties.

Obama further said that he would make sure Indian children receive a "world class education" and that his administration would end a century of "mismanagement of Indian trust." He pledged to fulfill the needs of the Native American peoples. Obama was the first presidential candidate in history to visit an Indian reservation.

  • first ever? i had no idea... that makes me sad.
  • Obama is not the answer to everything. He is just one man. The true power is in the people. People need to stop watching FOX news and find out what's really going in the world. I wonder what Obama thinks about the Republic of Lakotah? All power to the people

  • If you think you can trust the US government ask a Native American.

I saw that on a t-shirt being sold by a group of Native Americans at a 4th of July festival. (strange irony)

The anglo saxon history should one day be written for what it is and forever be detested just as Hittler is detested. As long as the cover-up exists the lie will live on. If the lie is allowed to live on "CHANGE" is out of reach.

  • Why are we celebrating the beginning of our conquest over the Native Americans and eventually the Mexicans. The people that originally inhabited this land are now subject to ridicule and quarantine.

  • diode - you are deluded...you should do some research on any of the current affairs you feel entitled to comment on, lest you appear ignorant...

I will wait to see what Obama does once he is elected, that is, if he is elected.

  • Obama was far from the first U.S. presidential candidate to visit and Indian Nation (not reservation).

Former President Bill Clinton visited Pine Ridge in the late '90s.

  • Hilary Clinton visited Pine Ridge on May 28,2008. Hillary Clinton also campaigned at the Flathead Indian Nation in Montana.

  • Obama was only the first presidential candidate to visit the Crow Agency in Montana.

Hillary Clinton won the support of many American Indian leaders including the Navajo Nation President and former Cherokee Nation Presiden because she had visited many Indian Nations over her life as a public servant and understands Tribal Sovereignty.

My husband took Senator John McCain on a tour of the deplorable conditions the Navajo Relocatees experienced in the 1980s. It was not Senator McCain's first visit to an Indian Nation and not his last.

The hype around Obama is astounding and has little relation to the facts.

Don't believe Obama will solve century-old problems that Indians endure, or stop the continued genoicide.

Expect another flip-flop when non-Indian landowners hear Obama plans to honor Indian Treaties.

  • We'll see when/ if he gets into office if these promises will be honored - and then to what degree that they will.

Maybe the treaties will be renegotiated - no new treaties haven't been created for about a hundred years - perhaps we can adapt them for the times.

hopefully this isn't an empty promise.

  • Renegotiate the treaties?
    Are you insane?
From past experience, we know that will not go well for Indians.

If treaties are the law of the land, they must be upheld and enforced as written.

The Lakotah in the mid-1800s who never ceded the Black Hills are not here anymore to be re-negotiate.
They retained the Sacred Paha Sapa for all time, but the U.S. Government violated their treaty, as they did the treaties with most tribes.
