Palin is feminism's greatest leap forward since Madonna says Paglia

Rip tide! Is the Obama campaign shooting out to sea like a paper boat?

It's heavy weather for Obama fans, as momentum has suddenly shifted to John McCain -- that hoary, barnacle-encrusted tub that many Democrats like me had thought was full of holes and swirling to its doom in the inky depths of Republican incoherence and fratricide. Gee whilikers, the McCain vampire just won't die! Hit him with a hammer, and he explodes like a jellyfish into a hundred hungry pieces...

... Pow! Wham! The Republicans unleashed a doozy -- one of the most stunning surprises that I have ever witnessed in my adult life. By lunchtime, Obama's triumph of the night before had been wiped right off the national radar screen. In a bold move I would never have thought him capable of, McCain introduced Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his pick for vice president.

"....... but right now, she seems to be merely an optimistic pragmatist like Ronald Reagan, someone who pays lip service to religious piety without being in the least wedded to it. I don't see her arrival as portending the end of civil liberties or life as we know it." says Pagila

And another view point that I read last night seemed to resonate more with my views....

    this one by Sherman Yellen

The closest we have seen to Sarah Palin in America is not Hillary Clinton or those stand-up, speak-out women who have fought for Women's Rights and Civil Rights but Amie Semple McPherson, the great woman Evangelist of the nineteen twenties. This was the woman upon whom Sinclair Lewis, the novelist, based the character of Sister Sarah in Elmer Gantry. The real life Amie could bring the crowds to their feet, pick their pockets, and make them believe that she was doing God's work and theirs, as she became rich from fleecing the poor who revered her"

whatever her real belief, she is doing what she was hired to do....get us away from the real issues that need to be tackled. (imho)

I'm still waiting for the interviews. The only Palin we've seen to this point is the pre-packaged speech that any actor can pull off. A great example would Ronald Reagan. When she has to come through with substance on the issues, it will be the stroke of midnight at Cinderella's ball. This election is one of the most important in our short history. It has to be about issues. The person with the best plan to resolve those issues should be elected. How do melatonin, vaginas, or penises figure into this equqtion?

Wow, Paglia really is full of crap! Any woman who thinks we should not have the right to choose is NOT a taking a step forward for the feminist agenda. I don't care how groundbreaking it is that Palin nominated- she's more anti-woman than I can believe. It doesn't make any sense at all!

Paglia really needs to read this:

...and so does every other woman thinking of voting for McCain only because of Sarah Palin.

Sarah's time in the lime light won't last. Give her a few one on one interviews and she will eventually hang herself. Obama should not even respond to her remarks and move forward with his campaign.

I agree. Obama needs to be move forward and not get side tracked by Palin and McCain.

We already have had a female VP many years ago and yes it is wonderful yet the issue is not that a woman is on the ticket. The real issue is who is best for the country and I think it safe to say that Obama/Biden would do more for our country than McCain ever will.

Sarah Palin is just about as feminist as Pat Buchannan. I can see her sittin' on her couch watchin' fishin' shows with her hand down the front of her pants.

I don't want to hear another word about her being a feminist, reformer, fighter or that having a large family somehow is a qualification for the office of Vice President.

If she were truly a feminist, she would have been appalled to be picked for VP merely due to gender and attractiveness. If she were a feminist she would not presume to impose her anti-choice agenda.

If she were a reformer, she would have said no thanks to the bridge to nowhere from the start and not only when it became a political time bomb, then still kept the money. If she were a reformer she wouldn't have requested and taken 27 million in earmarks as Wasilla Mayor. If she were a reformer, she wouldn't have billed her state for lodging at her own home, it goes on and on as we all know.

If she were a fighter, she would have the backbone to go on Meet the Press, or even better, interview with Bill Maher or Keith Olbermann, after all, Senator Obama went into the belly of the beast to be interviewed by Bill O'Reilly. If she were a fighter, like a pitbull with lipstick, she wouldn't be so thin skinned as to cry foul over Obama's lipstick on a pig still being a pig comment. A fighter, or any rational, informed person would take for what it was, a cliché that McCain has used repeatedly, and moreover, view it as McCain's own daughter, a ridiculous cause complaint.

As for a large family being a qualification. If that's a qualification, then everything about her family should be open to critical review. If that's a qualification, anyone who has followed my posts would know that I am uniquely qualified for the Vice Presidency as many of you are. I can also tell you I have had to make way tougher budgetary decisions than she has. Until you have to go a month without very needed meds so your 5 kids can have Christmas, you haven't really had to make hard budget decisions. Again, I know I am not alone in that column, but Sarah Palin is not in that column with us.
