    • World's oldest mum: Indian woman, 72, has twins to fulfill desire for male child

Omkari Panwar, 72, already a mother of two and grandmother of four, gave birth to twins making her the world's oldest mother. It emerged that the reason for her decision to try for another child was the overwhelming desire for a son, which was finally fulfilled with the help of in vitro fertilization.

The twins, a boy and a girl, were delivered by an emergency Caesarean section in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday. The father of the twins, 75-year-old Charam Singh, told ABC News he was very happy, but was reluctant to give more information as he feared a negative public reaction to his wife's decision to give birth despite her age.

The couple used their life savings and took out an additional loan to pay for the expensive medical procedures. Panwar had such great difficulties during her pregnancy that her husband was concerned for her life. When she arrived in hospital, she was in serious condition and needed a blood transfusion. Although the babies were born a month too early and had a low birth weight, they are doing well.

Male children are of extreme importance in Indian society, especially in rural areas. It is common to abort female children, often because of the expenses associated with the dowry system, which is still practised across India despite it being officially banned. In some Indian states, parents are even eligible for financial support if they are willing to raise a daughter.

    • "Save the Males": Who is being harmed by the oversexualization of girls?

Delving into the world of pre-teen "ho culture", with examples ranging from toddler shirts reading "Baby Porn Star" and a pole dancing instructional game, author Kathleen Parker asks why this overt sexuality is being exposed to (or maybe, forced on) young girls.

But more than asking why, Parker asserts that it is the male gender who is being hurt. Being exposed to sexuality in members of the opposite sex from such an early age will surely muddle boys' sense of sexuality as well.

"Once women sexually objectify themselves, it becomes harder to insist that others not."

Who is to blame for this trend of making little girls sex objects? Is it a serious problem, or harmless fun? Who is suffering here - our sons, our daughters, or both?

    • No more birds and bees? Sex education for 4-year-olds

Children as young as four should be given compulsory sex education in order to reduce abortion rates and sexually transmitted infections amongst teenagers.

The Family Planning Association and Brook, two leading sexual health charities, are pushing for an earlier and more gradual and thorough introduction of sex education in British schools. At the age of four, children would be taught about the name of body parts and basic ideas about different relationships. The charities claim that the government is not providing enough information about sex and relationships to young people, leaving many teenagers with unrealistic expectations about sex and insufficient knowledge of how to protect themselves against STIs and unwanted pregnancies.

Brook chief executive Simon Blake said: "All the evidence shows that if you start sex and relationships education early - before children start puberty, before they feel sexual attraction - they start having sex later. They are much more likely to use contraception and practise safe sex."

    • Best evidence yet that being gay is not a choice

Brain scans show that homosexuality is a biologically fixed trait with the brains of lesbians resembling straight men and gay male brains resembling those of straight women.

      As reported by New Scientist:
The scans reveal that in gay people, key structures of the brain governing emotion, mood, anxiety and aggressiveness resemble those in straight people of the opposite sex.

The differences are likely to have been forged in the womb or in early infancy, says Ivanka Savic, who conducted the study at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

"This is the most robust measure so far of cerebral differences between homosexual and heterosexual subjects," she says.

The results showed that straight men had asymmetric brains, with the right hemisphere slightly larger – and the gay women also had this asymmetry. Gay men, meanwhile, had symmetrical brains like those of straight women.

(Check out the full article on newscientist.com after the link. Fascinating stuff)

    • Pregnant man gives birth to baby girl

Infamous pregnant transgender man Thomas Beatie, 34, gave birth to a health baby girl on Sunday. According to a source, Beatie gave birth naturally and reports that he had a caesarean section are false.

Beatie was born female, but has been living as a man for several years and has legally changed his gender from female to male. He has also had his breasts surgically removed and has taken hormones in order to aid the transition process. However, having kept his female reproductive organs, he decided to give birth after it became evident that his wife, Nancy, was not able to have any more biological children. He was impregnated with sperm from an anonymous donor.

Beatie made headlines when first pictures of the 'pregnant man' appeared in April. In a controversial interview with Oprah, he famously declared that he thinks it is his 'right' to have a biological child even though he is a man.

    • Need to spruce up your ladyparts? Worry not - the vagina spa is here

A New York gynaecologist has opened the world's first va-jay-jay spa, a "uniquely feminine MedSpa destination" that offers vaginal workouts (with your own *private* exercise coach), pelvic fitness assessments, labial contouring, and the obligatory vaginal rejuvenation surgery that will help women tighten it all up down there.

“If you can vote and you have a vagina, you should do these [exercises],” says Dr Lauri J Romanzi, the founder of Phit (they called it Phit!?). “It’s the dental floss of feminine fitness,” apparently.

Now, I'm not quite sure how political engagement and pumping internal muscles go together (nor vaginas and dental floss, frankly), but it's a nice idea, and I bet women are flocking to the 'spa' like droopy-muffed moths to a flame.

Like there aren't enough things wrong with us that we need to fix already.

    • Women 'can't have casual sex like men': Daily Mail joins the women-bashing

Lock up your daughters, sisters, mums and mates! Casual sex can finally be revealed in all it's destructive glory by (wait for it...) The Daily Mail. Women, be warned.

Last week a report was unveiled that claimed women 'feel bad' after casual sex and are emotionally damaged by one-night stands, so they'd damn well better stop doing it. http://www.metro.co.uk/metrosexual/article.html?in_arti...

And now the Daily Mail has wheeled out some poor damaged girls to share their sob stories, and ram that moral lesson a little further down our throats. That's right people: the DM has Proved The Scientists Right.

One of the Mail's doe-eyed victims of the sexual revolution was apparently left feeling "worthless" and "emotionally destroyed" after a one-night stand, but it's ok, cos she understands now that men and women are *just different* and she's taken a vow of celibacy as a result.

And - how convenient! - the researcher cites basic, evolutionary biology as the reason that women just can't handle a one-nighter.

The DM can confirm that - lucky old things! - men are no more than their basic biological impulse to get down and dirty with anything that moves in order to spread their seed while women are better suited to... Well, staying at home, taking care of the kids, enjoying the odd monogamous shag when him indoors fancies meting it out, and seeming more attractive to said promiscuous male as a result.

Now, I *know* the Daily Mail's advice is in my best interests, but I just can't get my head around the idea (perhaps I need to think about it over the ironing) that because I'm a woman I'll naturally respond like the 'majority' of women to a one night stand (and 58% isn't much of a majority). Perhaps it's buried in my subconscious and I'm just too irrational to recognise it but, unless I'm confusing myself, I don't recall having responded to many experiences like *every other woman* in the world, just as I can't quite remember having responded to any given scenario like every other brunette, or every other bisexual woman, or every other deaf person.

The Mail's totally unbiased reporting tips the balance in this argument though - not only will putting it about with a number of 'Mr Wrongs' make you feel like crap, but it'll decrease your chances of ever meeting 'Mr Right' too! It's clearly not worth the risk. Thank you Daily Mail, for showing me the error of my ways.

Now where's that chastity belt... Oh yes. It's in the BIN. Along with any copies of the Daily Mail ever to have existed.

Female First (everyone's favourite top quality purveyor of insightful news for women) reports that Lindsay Lohan is adopting the 'passive wife' role in her rumoured lesbian relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson.

Good to see gender stereotypes are alive and well! And great to see the alleged lesbian relationship of two Hollywood stars reduced to 'playing house'! Happy (or maybe even, um, gay) days!

Are you a top or a bottom? Do you wear the skirt or the trousers? Or are you simply a human being who's active sometimes, passive at others, and generally far too good for any of this sterotyping nonsense anyway?

    • Sex trade: 18,000 women and children trafficked into UK

Up to 18,000 females, including girls as young as 14, are working in brothels across Britain after being smuggled into the country, a new police survey reveals. Nearly five times more women than previously thought are working in massage parlours and suburban homes.

Operation Pentameter 2, a six-month campaign by police forces across the country, has exposed the horrifying extent of the sex trade industry in the UK. Because of the booming demand for prostitutes in the UK, prostitution and people trafficking is now the third most lucrative black-market trade after gun running and drug dealing. Organised crime gangs increasingly use the internet to communicate and maximise their earnings.

Most of the victims are young and foreign, coming from countries including Brazil, China, Lithuania and Thailand. Often, women are lured away from their homes with promises of work in bars or nightclubs, before being sold for up to £5,000 to pimps and brothel-keepers. The women are then forced to work for little or no income under threat of violence against their families.

As a result of Operation Pentameter 2, 528 suspected traffickers were arrested and 822 brothels closes. 154 women and 13 girls were released.

    • Condoms for climate change!

There are too many people on this planet producing harmful, global-warming related carbon, eating its food and damaging its environment and the number of us just keeps on growing. In short, we are becomming unsustainable. So what's the solution?

Well, let's go back to the beginning and talk about sex. This is the topic addressed by environmentalist and author Robert Engelman in his new book 'More: Population, Nature and What Women Want". Engelman argues that better sex education and access to contraception can be the key to easing many of the world's problems, from social and economic instability to climate change.

For an activity that's done about 215 million times every day, producing more babies than the planet can handle, maybe it's about time we get everyone to bring discussion about sex out from under the covers, and into the open.

As Sydney prepares for a visit by Pope Benedict XVI and 225,000 young pilgrims, the city's brothels are readying themselves for an expected surge in demand for sex.

"The World Council of Churches, when they had their congress in Canberra back in the 1990s, was the best business period ever", says Sydney brothel manager.

The Eros Association, Australia's adult industry group, said sex shops and brothels across Sydney are expecting "huge turnover" during World Youth Day.

"We know the kind of people who visit prostitutes and adult shops, many of them do it because of their own personal repression," Eros spokesman Robbie Swan told AFP. "And often it's because of religion. Our industry is the forbidden fruit industry."

    • Involuntary sex change: man is naturally turning into a woman against his will

Terry Wright, 60, is turning into a woman due to abnormally high levels of the female hormone oestrogen. Medical experts are intrigued by the unique case, but are unable to explain or reverse the sexual transformation.

About ten years ago, Wright, who has five children and works as a pub singer in Birmingham, noticed that he was losing his hair and beard. Since then, he has developed smooth skin and breasts and has complained about hot flushes. Wright, who has never doubted his male gender identity, has been wrongly suspected of secretly trying to change his sex and has been offered a sex change operation by his GP, which he refused.

Some intersex conditions are associated with involuntary and natural sexual transformations, but these changes usually take place during puberty. Mr Wright states: "Doctors call me an 'interesting case' and 'unique' but I just want to go back to being a proper man."
