    • Nikon Debuts Video Headset With Wi-Fi, 8GB of Storage, and a Browser

I think Nikon must be trying to appeal to the cyborg in all of us, as it announced this week that it's creating a 'wearable PC' with up to 8GB of flash memory for videos, audio and file storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, a full-featured internet browser and on the 300x model, even motion control. The thing is basically a set of headphones with a display stuck to the side, though the specs are still pretty impressive, if cumbersome-sounding. The MacBook Brick is a block of high-quality, aircraft grade aluminum. It is the beginning.
      The beginning of what?

It is the beginning of the new Apple manufacturing process to make MacBooks. It is totally revolutionary, a game changer. One of the biggest Apple innovations in a decade.

The MacBook manufacturing process up to this point has been outsourced to Chinese or Taiwanese manufacturers like Foxconn. Now Apple is in charge. The company has spent the last few years building an entirely new manufacturing process that uses lasers and jets of water to carve the MacBooks out of a brick of aluminum.

    • Flexible screen could lead to foldable computers

Researchers have demonstrated a flexible television screen which could result in people folding up their computer and putting it in their pocket.

The design could be used for television and posters, as well as computers, while it could also pave the way for the development of newspaper display technology which would allow readers to upload daily news to an easy-to-carry display contraption.

The concept demo was unveiled by researchers from Sony and the Max Planck Institute in Germany who believe "Rigid television screens, bulky laptops and still image posters are to be a thing of the past".

It is all organic, flexible and transparent with an extremely low energy requirement, while it has an almost unlimited viewing angle and high efficiency.

There is no need for a backlight and response times are up to 10 times fast than LCDs (liquid crystal displays), meaning ultra-smooth motion without blurring.

Due to the transparency, it is thought multiple layers can be stacked possibly for some types of 3D effects.

Previous attempts at flexible screens are hampered by size and resolution problems, while the image was also affected when the screen was folded.

Moving images on posters, seen in films such as Minority Report could also be a possibility, as well as cereal boxes with talking images.

Researchers told the Journal of Physics: "The displays have excellent brightness and are transparent, bendable and flexible.

"There are practically no display size limitations and they could be produced relatively easily and cheaply compared to today's screens."

In 2006, Sony demonstrated an earlier version of this work, but technical, mechanical and design issues prevented them from mass producing the previous model.

LOVE OVERKILL è un cortometraggio di fantascienza.
Le animazioni 3D, la colonna sonora originale e il testo sono di Luca Oleastri (me).
Realizzato con Bryce, Poser, Photoshop e After Effect.

      Io li amo.
      I love you.
      I love you.

    • New Law: Computer technicians must report child porn to police

      Chicago, IL

Computer technicians will have to report to local police if they find child pornography on a customer's computer under a new law signed today by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The child pornography provision amends a current law that already requires photo processors to report potentially criminal images.

The governor also signed legislation that would make it illegal for adults to bully children on Internet sites. According to lawmakers, the bill is a response to a well-known Missouri case of cyber-bullying.

The computer porn and cyber-bullying provisions are contained in a package of legislation that amends the state's current laws aimed at protecting children on the Internet.

A truck stolen loaded with £600,000 worth of stolen computer games (including Grand Theft Auto IV) was seized by UK polive earlier this week - only for it to have been stolen back from the police pound hours later.

The determined crooks lifted seven pallets of games for the PS3 and were making their getaway when police pulled them over for having false numberplates, and taken to a secure depot. The thieves smashed the 'secure' depot and drove off, and are still thought to be on the loose. The stolen games, of course, are also unaccounted for.

Police say a Boston man posted a death announcement on his family Web site before fatally shooting his wife and himself.

Burdened by debt and facing eviction, a self-employed Boston computer consultant killed his wife and then shot himself Sunday night - but not before leaving a chilling posting on his Internet website announcing their deaths, according to the posting, Boston police, and court records.

Christian Mogensen, 61, was inside the couple's 20th-floor apartment in Charles River Park when he shot and killed his wife of almost 12 years, 60-year-old Sharon Glassman, with a single gunshot around 9:30 p.m., authorities said. He shot himself a short time afterward, police said.

    • Congress Web site overwhelmed

The servers hosting the Web sites of the House of Representatives and its members have been overwhelmed with millions of e-mails in the past few days, forcing administrators to implement the "digital version of a traffic cop" to handle the overload -- for the first time ever.

"This is unprecedented," said Jeff Ventura, communications director for the House's chief administrator.

The tidal waves of e-mails and page views began over the weekend after negotiators announced Sunday that a deal had been reached on legislation to enact a $700 billion bailout of the country's financial system.

In making the announcement, legislators said the public could view the agreement at financialservices.house.gov.

"In a short period of time, lots of Web users were rushing to the digital doorway to get a copy of this thing," Ventura told CNN in a phone interview.

As millions of people tried to look at the details of the bailout plan, the House.gov system became overwhelmed and many people saw notices on their computer screens saying "this page does not appear."

Ventura compared the situation to the "old days, when you listened to a radio show and the 10th caller got a toaster. Then everyone calls the same 1-800 number at the same time and all you got was a busy signal."

"This was a massive digital busy signal," he said.

As more people gained access to the page and details of the bailout proposal were published in the news media, constituents then started to e-mail their representatives, Ventura explained.

"We know it's in the millions," he said of the number of e-mails that lawmakers in the House have been receiving. "But we haven't counted yet, because when you're about to get hit by a tidal wave, you don't count the drops of water in the wave."

After the House failed to pass the proposed deal Monday by a vote of 228-205, the e-mail volume surged again, Ventura said.

"Because there were so many e-mails, it was impacting even the presentation of House.gov," he explained.

    • Hacker Ethic

Hackers are traditionally viewed as renegade computer nerds wreaking havoc on innocent citizens, but a lot of hackers are do-it-yourself (DIY) electricians, programmers, security consultants and artists who may operate in grey areas yet to be defined by law.

Hacker Ethic is a provocative feature documentary that explores the politics and culture of the latest generation of hackers.

Although hackers vary in range from being total social misfits to high-tech entrepreneurs, their independence is in the same spirit that pioneered this country. Their skills have driven them to test the ethical boundaries of ownership, security, privacy and censorship.

News coverage is mired with the election, terrorists and wars. Trendy court cases and publicity-driven appearances cause judicial gridlock. All of which dominate prime-time news. In the meantime, domestic conversations about how technology is forging ahead of our laws are brimming under the public’s radar in heated, constitutional debates.

This film aims to cover the debates and culture clambering on the cutting edge of emerging technologies.

Following closely from the statistic that most kids in the US spend a sizable chunk of their time playing video games, it perhaps isn't entirely surprising that it is also the most sought-after category of Christmas present. Music games top the list, with Guitar Hero World Tour topping the "want" chart with 17% of kids desiring it. • Grid of 100,000 computers heralds new internet dawn. "The Grid"

A network of 100,000 computers providing the greatest data processing capacity yet unleashed has been created to cope with information pouring from the world’s largest machine.

The Grid is the latest evolution of the internet and the world wide web and computer scientists will announce on Friday that it is ready to be connected to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

It is designed for schemes where huge quantities of data need crunching, such as large research and engineering projects. The Grid has the kind of power required to download movies in seconds, and the ability to make high-definition video phone calls for the same price as a local call. More importantly, it should help to narrow the search for cures for diseases. However, it is unlikely to be directly available to most internet users until telecoms providers build the fibre-optic network required to use it.

The Grid allows scientists at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, to get access to the unemployed processing power of thousands of computers in 33 countries to deal with the data created by the LHC.

Scientists at CERN, where the world wide web was invented, created the €500 million Grid because they realised that a single computer would not be able to cope with the amount of data the LHC is expected to produce each year – 15 petabytes, or 15 million gigabytes, which would fill 20 million CDs.

They said that it was an extra facility laid on top of the internet, which originally linked computers around the world in the Seventies.

Dr Bob Jones, a CERN scientist, said: “The [world wide] web allows you to access information on other computers. What the Grid allows you to do is not only access the information, but make use of their computing resources and power.”

He likened it to the National Grid. Users would be able to tap into massive amounts of processing power, but the source of the power would change, depending on availability.

Processing tasks will be distributed between 11 gateway computer centres in ten countries, including Britain, which will share them out between more than 140 sites.

One of the first jobs the Grid will tackle is handling the raw data for CERN’s experiments into finding proof of the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle.

Its uses, however, extend well beyond particle physics and it has already been used on a smaller scale in research into diseases such as malaria and bird flu. “The Grid cannot find a cure for cancer, but what it can do is make it quicker,” said Dr Jones, explaining that what might have taken a decade could now be done in weeks.

David Britton, Professor of Physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the Grid project, said: “The old traditional way to find cures for diseases is that you would go to the lab and try mixing various drugs and see how they work.”

With the Grid, he said, scientists could run hundreds of thousands of simulations to create a shortlist of the drugs that are most likely to offer the potential for a cure. Researchers can then get to work testing the drugs singled out as promising.

The Grid has also already been used to save lives in the immediate aftermath of earthquakes. Using the seismic data, scientists can use the Grid for simulations that pinpoint which areas are most affected, allowing rescue teams to direct their efforts where they are most needed.

Many believe the world wide web and the internet are the same thing, but the internet is actually a massive network of networks, which connects millions of computers together globally, and the web is an information-sharing model built on top of the internet, which allows information to be accessed over the medium of the internet.

I HOPE THEY ARE NOT PC'S USING MICROSOFT. Its a goner!

    • Bill Would Ban Laptop Searches by DHS

DID YOU KNOW? The Department of Homeland Security has virtually unfettered authority to search, copy and archive the contents of laptops, cell phones and digital cameras travelers carry into the US. Sen. Russ Feingold wants to change that.

He submitted a bill called "Travelers Privacy Protection Act" that would require 'reasonable suspicion' before DHS electronics search. Any customs agent who wants to go poking around your laptop's hard drive is going to need a legitimate reason to do so, if legislation proposed Monday is adopted.

“Most Americans would be shocked to learn that upon their return to the U.S. from traveling abroad, the government could demand the password to their laptop, hold it for as long as it wants, pore over their documents, emails, and photographs, and examine which websites they visited – all without any suggestion of wrong-doing,” Feingold said.

"Focusing our limited law enforcement resources on law-abiding Americans who present no basis for suspicion does not make us any safer and is a gross violation of privacy. This bill will bring the government’s practices at the border back in line with the reasonable expectations of law-abiding Americans.”

Last year, DHS reversed a two-decade old policy that required reasonable suspicion before Customs and Border Patrol agents could search a travelers' documents, including the contents of laptops, cell phones, digital cameras and other devices. The new policy also made it easier for DHS to share information it collected with other law enforcement agencies, a provision civil liberties advocates could let those agencies use DHS to conduct warrantless searches on their behalf and subvert the Fourth Amendment.

How would you like to increase your office productivity by as much as 50%?

Add a second monitor to your computer setup. Once you do, you'll never go back to using only one monitor again.

For example, you can open a document or presentation on one monitor and use the other to conduct research on the Web. Or, see your e-mail arrive as you work. Photo editors really benefit from having an image open on one monitor and the tool bars in full view on the second monitor. Video editing suddenly becomes almost as easy as the TV commercials promise.
