Cambodian couple saw house in half in divorce
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - A couple in rural Cambodia has terminated their 18-year marriage with a divorce settlement that entailed sawing in two the wooden house they once shared, villagers said Friday. The husband, 42-year-old Moeun Sarim, has taken away with him all the bits and pieces of his half a house, said his 35-year-old wife, Vat Navy.
"Very strange, but this is what my husband wanted," she said by phone from a village about 62 miles east of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh. She said they ended their marriage last month.
"He brought his relatives and used saws to cut the house in half," she said, adding that she now owns the other half that is still standing. The house is made from wood with a tile roof and propped up on wooden pillars, a typical style for a Cambodian country home.
She said her estranged husband and his relatives, after ripping apart half of the house, carried all the debris to his parents' house nearby.
She said the divorce was prompted by her husband's jealousy about her alleged relationship with a policeman in the village. She denied having an extramarital affair.
"He wanted a divorce, and I said, `Let's divorce,'" she said.
The husband could not be reached for comment.
Bou Bout, a village chief, said local officials and police were present as witnesses the day the couple split their 20-by-24 1/2 foot house into half.
"Local officials tried three times to get them to mend their differences, but the husband would not budge," Bou Bout said by phone. PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - A couple in rural Cambodia has terminated their 18-year marriage with a divorce settlement that entailed sawing... more -
Deaf clubbers enjoy 'smell' of music
A deaf club night in Finland called SenCity is using scents, vibrating dance floors and sign language dancers to help its customers "translate the emotions" of music.
The scents – vapors from burning oils – are chosen to represent the moods of the songs being played; citrus smells, for instance, would be released during an upbeat, happy track. The club also plays host to "visual jockeys" who direct a team of signdancers who interpret the lyrics using a combination of sign language and dance moves. Clubbers can also feel the beat of the music thanks to a vibrating platform installed on the dancefloor. It has been fitted with a transmitter to enhance the intensity of vibrations.
Hokin Zerga, who travelled from France to attend the club night, said that she was impressed by the impact of the aroma jockeys. "While hard-of-hearing deaf people can enjoy lyrics, deaf people like myself can't, so smells help us identify the emotion and style of the music." Meghan McCain : John McCain in a dress
Larry King: Why a children's book, I think aimed at five to 10-year-olds, about your father?
Meghan McCain: I just thought it would be a really great way to make my father's story accessible to children. It is a really fascinating, patriotic American hero story and I had actually met a lot of people on the trail that weren't familiar with his story and --
King: What kind of father is he?
McCain: Great. I'm really lucky. I have a really great relationship with my dad. We have always been kindred spirits. My mom calls me "John McCain in a dress." We're a lot alike. We have a great relationship.
King: What's the toughest part about writing a children's book?
McCain: The illustrations were the hardest for me. How do you illustrate your father being tortured? Watch McCain say what her parents think of the book »
King: What would your life be like if he's elected? You will have Secret Service protection.
McCain: I know. I really don't want to do that.
King: You don't like that?

Dr. Phil tells Larry what the presidential candidates really mean when they say or do certain things.

McCain: No, I really respect what they do, because obviously they're there to protect my family, but it's really weird. There are always people there to open up a room. I went with my mom to CVS and they had to check with CVS before we went in and there were people everywhere.
King: Were you surprised of his selection for vice president?
McCain: I think to a degree everyone was surprised because [Sarah Palin] was an unknown. But I'm very, very pleased with it. I love her. I'm really excited about it.
King: What do you like about her?
McCain: First of all, she's really chill. She's really nice, really friendly. She's really up on pop culture, which I always respect. She's very smart. She doesn't act entitled, which unfortunately sometimes you get with some politicians. She's just like your average girl, like just a mom. But she's very, very shrewd, very smart. I've heard her talking about issues. Watch Larry King reveal what disappointed him in the interview »
King: They had fun with her on "Saturday Night Live."
McCain: I saw. I used to intern there.
King: You interned at "Saturday Night Live?" What was that like?
McCain: It was incredible. I was there for the Ashlee Simpson lip synching incident. It was fantastic.
King: You have blogged in support of Bristol Palin, who is with child, as we know. What made you speak out on that?
McCain: I have grown up in politics forever. My father has been kind of pretty public. He ran for president when I was 14. I know what it's like to have children become a point of criticism or used as an example. She's 17 and she grew up in a small town in Alaska. I think people should support her and the media should lay off a little. She's very young and she's just trying to live her life. I don't think she should be an example of what to do or not to do. I just think she should be Governor Palin's daughter.
King: What do you make of those who say that if you criticize Governor Palin, it's sexism?
McCain: I don't think necessarily criticizing any candidate is sexism, but I do think that sexism has played a role with the governor and with Senator Clinton as well in this election. I don't think criticizing a candidate, no matter what gender, is necessarily sexism.
King: You think Senator Clinton was a victim of it, too?
McCain: I do.
King: What do you think of Senator Obama?
McCain: I think he's a really fantastic candidate as well. I really love that there's two such historical tickets right now. I think he's been respectful. I'm just really enjoying the election.
+ It is great How CNN Took "Sarah Palin is Really chill" out of this for their HEADLINE

LIVE FEED: Bush War Crimes Conference
Saturday morning, the dean of Massachusetts School of Law at Andover will convene a two day planning session with a single focus: To arrest, put to trial and carry out sentence on criminals in the Bush Administration.
The conference, arranged by Lawrence Vevel, cofounder of the Andover school, will focus on which of Bush's officials and members of Congress could be charged with war crimes. The plan also calls for "necessary organizational structures" to be established, with the purpose of pursuing the guilty "to the ends of the Earth."
"For Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and John Yoo to spend years in jail or go to the gallows for their crimes would be a powerful lesson to future American leaders," Velvel said in a media advisory. Saturday morning, the dean of Massachusetts School of Law at Andover will convene a two day planning session with a single focus: To a... more -

Love Story: Young WI kayakers circle Lake Superior and celebrate their love
Ashland, Wisconsin residents Alissa Weitz, 26, and Brian Castillo, 23, will soon be completing their 1,300 mile journey around Lake Superior.
They are a couple in love with Lake Superior and each other - on a modern day lover's adventure.
They arrived in Marquette in late July and spent Lake Superior Day hiking with friends and swimming including jumping off the tall cliffs at the city’s “black rocks.”
A big part of their quest is educating the public about the environmental value of Lake Superior.
Averaging 25 miles a day - with their longest day over 40 miles.
They encountered water temperatures as low as 38 degrees, fog outside of Marquette, rough waves outside of Houghton, Michigan that prevent them from rounding the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula - and instead cut through the Keweenaw Waterway.
They left Ashland, Wisconsin on July 1 and hope to complete their two-month journey around the first week of September.
Weitz is a native of Dubuque, IA & Castillo is a native of Madison, WI.
Graduates of the Northland College outdoor education program in Ashland, Wisconsin, the couple were competitors working for different kayak guiding companies when they met two years ago and fell in love.
They are documenting their adventure at:
http://www.sessiononsuperior.blogspot.com
Thanks to Down Wind Sports in Marquette, Brian picked up a new kayak due to problems with the one used during the first part of the trek. Sea Kayak Specialists of Marquette provided tools and space to repair their equipment.
This video was made in cooperation with the Cedar Tree Institute, Earth Keeper Initiative, Earth Healing Initiative and Turtle Island Project, all northern Michigan non-profits protecting Lake Superior.
Special thanks to the Lake Superior Binational Forum for helping make this video possible.

Purging The Stupid (Finally, software that zaps the most obnoxious Web chatter)
The advent of raising your intellectual internet posting game is here, thanks to YouTube Comment Snob and Stupidfilter.org.
From Mark Morford:
"Like most genius ideas, The Snob is almost frighteningly simple: It is merely a tiny Firefox browser extension that works to filter out the most childish, overpunctuated, all-capped, horribly grammared, or otherwise useless comments that clog up the YouTube comments boards. "
"StupidFilter is designed to do everything the Snob does, only better, faster, cleaner -- and maybe, just maybe, for the entire Web itself. It's creators are apparently quite serious. StupidFilter is open-source, usable on any blog or wiki or media site anywhere. There's an official site. There's source code under GNU General Public License. There appears to even be some venture capital funding. Best of all: It's already in beta. Isn't that beautiful? Cheers to your health: Czech beer spa offers sudsy soaks
Say what you will about the healing properties of mud baths, saunas or lavender-scented candles, but soaking in a stainless-steel tub filled with Czech beer put my body and soul at ease.
I was in the brick-lined cellar of Prave Pivni Lazni (original beer spa), run by the Chodovar brewery in the tiny Czech town of Chodova Plana, and I was about to slip naked into the first tub I'd ever seen with taps for hot water, cold water and bathing beer. Called Romantic Feelings, it is a staggering 115ft high and 656ft long - the largest snow sculpture ever created. It was made by joining together 15ft square blocks of natural ice and snow, taken from the nearby Songhua River, which have been compressed to withstand blows from hatchets, saws and shovels.
