The Revolution will be "Twittered"
The group of law enforcement agencies charged with handling security during the Republican National Convention had $50 million to spend on weapons and equipment.
However, the greatest advancement in the age-old grudge match between an angry citizenry and the state was not found on the side of the police. A free and public social-media website called Twitter, which publishes brief messages sent in from cell phones and computers, was a game-changer for protesters, organizers, and journalists covering the event.
Protest organizers were able to use social-networking tools to quickly assemble and disassemble groups of demonstrators, summon media and legal observers, and keep track of the arrested and detained.
By the end of the convention there had been 1,375 sources posting more than 17,000 messages about the events inside and outside the RNC convention. The group of law enforcement agencies charged with handling security during the Republican National Convention had $50 million to spen... more -

A social network where you can be too social?
This is a very interesting article from Washington Post written by Kim Hart
"For many, Facebook has become an indispensable tool for managing their social lives. But all the friending, messaging and poking on the online social network has created a hazard: using it too much.
Elizabeth Coe found out after she sent 100 friends and professional acquaintances a link to her company's Web site. She got booted.
In an e-mail a few days after she sent the link, Facebook said her account had been disabled for "persistent misuse of the site."
Facebook, she concluded, thought she was spamming her friends. "All I was doing is using it to communicate more efficiently, which is what I thought it was for," said Coe, 25, of Centreville. "I don't feel like I was violating any code of ethics."
Others have been kicked off the popular site for adding too many friends at once; sending too many messages; joining too many groups; or "poking" too many friends, a casual greeting on the site. Shunned Facebookers said the punishment contradicts the site's core mission -- to help people connect and communicate.
"Facebook is shutting down accounts of users who are exhibiting any behavior it finds remotely suspicious," Thor Muller wrote in a post called "13 Reasons Your Facebook Account Will Be Disabled" on GetSatisfaction.com, which offers customer-service advice. "As paradoxical as it sounds, 'suspicious' often means just using the site too much!"
A large part of Facebook's appeal comes from its ability to connect casual or distant acquaintances, such as high school classmates or friends of friends, said Matthew Salganik, assistant professor of sociology at Princeton University. But with 100 million users, shutting down accounts for questionable activity has become increasingly important. The network faces the challenge of allowing members to communicate when and how they want without inundating one another with a flood of messages.

McCain Seeks Facebook Friends
John McCain's old and doesn't really know how to use computers. But give him some credit, the man is trying really hard to be more hip. In addition to picking a lovely young woman who nobody's ever heard of to be his VP, he's now selling some awesome social networking themed t-shirts, rally signs and buttons in the 'Students for McCain' section of his official campaign store. The slogan? "John McCain is my Facebook Friend." We're guessing this was Meghan's idea... The back of the t-shirt says "(SERIOUSLY)". At least they're kind of in on the joke. But make no mistake, the race for the most Presidential Facebook friends is officially ON. And McCain has some catching up to do.
Their friend counts currently:
* Barack Obama: 1,450,113
* John McCain: 232,054 John McCain's old and doesn't really know how to use computers. But give him some credit, the man is trying really hard to b... more -

Coming soon... Facebook: the movie? Um, what?
West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin is planning a movie about the creation and rise of Facebook.
Sorkin opened an account on Facebook on Wednesday and admitted to being a little in the dark about the site's workings:
!I understand there are a few other people using Facebook pages under my name - which I find more flattering than creepy - but this is me," he wrote. "I don't know how I can prove that but feel free to test me.
"I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.)"
Sorkin wants Facebook members to send him interesting stories they might have about the site though curiously it doesn't seem possible to add him as a friend right now.
Two questions: Who should play Mark Zuckerberg, and does this sound like a terrible idea to anyone else? West Wing writer Aaron Sorkin is planning a movie about the creation and rise of Facebook. ... more -
