Why has the price of gas in the U.S. not gone up with the oil "crisis" in Georgia,
When every other blip in the oil machine since the Bush Administration and big oil lobbied to change the rules on oil futures speculation (that were put in place to protect the American economy) has caused the price of gas to go up?
The answer my friend is that election time is here and the price of gas never goes up just before an election. It drops to lull us in to complacency, and so we are less likely to vote. Now what does that say for our "free" market?
Sick as it may sound this war should be a wake up call to the American people that our markets and our lives are being controlled like no other time in our history. Unfortunately most Americans will not make the connection and major media will not approach the story.

    • Report Says Fire, Not Explosion, Felled 7 W.T.C.

Fires in the 47-story office tower at the edge of the World Trade Center site undermined floor beams and critical structural columns, federal investigators concluded Thursday, as they attempted to curb still-rampant speculation that explosives or fuel fires were responsible for the building’s collapse of Sept. 11, 2001.

The long-delayed report by engineers here at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in suburban Washington is intended to solve one of still lingering central questions about the 2001 attacks: Why did 7 World Trade Center fall, if it was not hit by an airplane.

    • UnConventionally Yours

The summer of 2008's Republican and Democratic Conventions offer an opportunity for Current TV to launch a new brand of political coverage aimed at the 18-30 year old demographic. Political gadflies in lock step with Party foot soldiers will swarm Denver and Minneapolis looking for a refuge to pull together shaky party unities. But will the distractions prove too tempting to conventioneers immersed in the political super bowls of their lives? And will the host cities be as welcoming as each local Party officials hope?

Host, Trace Crutchfield will alternate interviewing politicos and local "insurgents" (extremists who plan to cause disruptions) with a detailed City Guide that explores the fringes of each town --beautiful fashionistas, marginalized characters and locals only joints-- the kinds of people and places Current's audience won't find in a conventional or online guide.

Show 1, "UnConventionally Yours, Denver" will delve into the mile high city. Will the wild westerners of Denver prove too tough for out of town Democrats gassed on sparkling wine and arugula? Can the Democrats resuscitate the Clinton squeaky wheel political machine in time to carry Senator Obama to the White House? Does Tom Tancredo ride the city bus?

    • NSA security officer: We should just kill these people

When somebody within your own government calls you out, do you show up? How do you handle it?

Wayne Madsen, always spoiling for a fight with Bush and Cheney, or the chance to show off his undies to minimum wage airport TSA workers, has an executive level NSA staff person on record saying that significant sentiment exists within the NSA to kill troublesome bloggers and journalists.

The NSA executive staffer was, apparently, not the source of the sentiment, but this individual did pass along the context and the precise wording of the “junior G-man” working in the NSA. Prominent names listed in the NSA database of troublemakers?

      1. Bill Gertz

      2. James Bamford

      3. Vernon Loeb

      4. Jim Risen

      5. Dr. John C. K. Daly

      6. Wayne Madsen

      7. Seymour Hersh

These were all the names Madsen published, but there are, of course, many others. Possibly you, gentle reader.

      If not now, probably later.

As much as Madsen hates Daily Kos, I would think that if Kos was in the database, he would have published his name, too. Markos Moulitsas Zuniga — a name that should just roll off the Hebroid-Russian tongue of George Soros, and frequently does — is he NOT in the NSA’s database of journalists and bloggers to be put out of Cheney’s misery?

Wear nice underwear when you travel, bloggers. The TSA will soon be checking your anal orifice for that extra 3 ounces of shampoo you just can’t live without.

More smoke and mirrors tricks as they try to eliminate the smoke from the smoking gun... cough, cough!

The US Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will hold a media briefing and live public webcast on August 21, 2008, in Gaithersburg, Md., on the findings and recommendations from its building and fire safety investigation of the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 (WTC 7). WTC 7 was a 47-story building that fell nearly seven hours after the World Trade Center (WTC) towers collapsed following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The NIST WTC 7 report will present the probable collapse sequence for the building and will provide recommendations for improving building and fire safety in other buildings similar to WTC 7. The draft WTC 7 investigation report released at the briefing will be open for public comment through to noon Eastern Daylight Time on Sept. 15, 2008.

    • Strange things at Reuters photos from Georgia:Pictures to provoke hatred and more ...

Remember the image of an emaciated Bosnian Muslim allegedly caged behind "Serb barbed wire", in a "Serb concentration camp" Trnopolje? The fake photo filmed by a British news team became a worldwide symbol of the war in Bosnia. Even after it was proven that the "prisoner" wasn't a prisoner to begin with, and was filmed outside the gate, part of which had barbed wire, this picture had still continued to be proudly exhibited all over the world to this day as the "evidence" that Serbs ran the "concentration camps" in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Even the Hague tribunal's web site carries this fake image on its home page, offering another demonstration of its patent bias and voluntary blindness, a willful disregard for the facts and truth in all forms.

Deception through imagery is as old as man's ability to produce images. But photo-manipulation and staging the atrocities against one's own people to have them immediately filmed, disseminated throughout the world and used to provoke violent reaction -- retaliation -- against the designated culprit, was never used with so much success in propaganda war as during the 1990s, against the Serbs in all stages of Yugoslav civil wars.

    • 2 Surprising Facts about the MLK Assassination

      1) Martin Luther King, Jr. was out on that balcony because he was smoking.
According to Kyles, King was a regular smoker, but he hid his habit so that kids wouldn’t imitate him. Apparently, once King had been shot, the quick-thinking Kyles took the crushed cigarette out of the Reverend’s hand. He also took the package of cigarettes out from his pocket. It’s stunning to me that there don’t seem to be any pictures of Martin Luther King, Jr smoking anywhere (or that the brand he smoked hasn’t tried to capitalize off this). Then again, there aren’t that many pics of FDR in a wheelchair, nor wheelchair manufacturers who’ve emerged to talk about how much their wheels aided the former president.

      2) No one could call an ambulance because the hotel’s switchboard operator died.
There were two deaths that day. While the shot to King proved fatal, the woman who stepped out from her office to get a glimpse of the Civil Rights hero, ended up seeing the assassination. She immediately had a heart attack from the shock, and died soon after from it. As the motel owner’s wife, she was also the only person on the premises who knew how to operate the phones, and King’s friends and associates were left scrambling to find another means of getting help.
      In Kyles’ own words,
“I ran into the room and picked up the phone to call an operator or to call an ambulance. But, the operator had left the switchboard. There was nobody on the switchboard. I was saying, “Answer the phone, answer the phone, answer the phone.” And there was nobody on the switchboard. So the phone was not answered. (I learned later that the operator had gone out into the courtyard to watch Dr. King. When she saw what happened, she had a heart attack. She was the motel owner’s wife, and she died subsequently.) The police were coming with their guns drawn, and I hollered to the police, “Call an ambulance on your police radio. Dr. King has been shot.” They said, “Where did the shot come from?” … While waiting for the ambulance to come, I took a spread from one of the beds and covered him from his neck down. … I cannot tell you the feelings I had seeing my friend there on that balcony bleeding to death. Finally the ambulance came and took him away.”

    • Cheney considered proposal to dress up Navy Seals as Iranians and shoot at them

To all those scoffing at the headline, Seymour Hersh is no lightweight. After exposing the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam conflict in 1969 he received the 1970 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. He also wrote reports in 2004 regarding the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison which gained much recognition.

The fact that we’re hearing these kind of stories coming from reputable reporters like Hersh and not just the likes of Alex Jones, should be a wake up call to moderates who find it hard to believe that such clandestine and repugnant operations actually occur.

Speaking at the Campus Progress journalism conference earlier this month, Seymour Hersh - a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist for The New Yorker - revealed that Bush administration officials held a meeting recently in the Vice President's office to discuss ways to provoke a war with Iran.

In Hersh's most recent article, he reports that this meeting occurred in the wake of the overblown incident in the Strait of Hormuz, when a U.S. carrier almost shot at a few small Iranian speedboats. The "meeting took place in the Vice-President's office. 'The subject was how to create a casus belli between Tehran and Washington,'" according to one of Hersh's sources.

During the journalism conference event, I asked Hersh specifically about this meeting and if he could elaborate on what occurred. Hersh explained that, during the meeting in Cheney's office, an idea was considered to dress up Navy Seals as Iranians, put them on fake Iranian speedboats, and shoot at them. This idea, intended to provoke an Iran war, was ultimately rejected:

HERSH: There was a dozen ideas proffered about how to trigger a war. The one that interested me the most was why don't we build - we in our shipyard - build four or five boats that look like Iranian PT boats. Put Navy seals on them with a lot of arms. And next time one of our boats goes to the Straits of Hormuz, start a shoot-up.

Might cost some lives. And it was rejected because you can't have Americans killing Americans. That's the kind of - that's the level of stuff we're talking about. Provocation. But that was rejected.

Hersh argued that one of the things the Bush administration learned during the encounter in the Strait of Hormuz was that, "if you get the right incident, the American public will support" it.

"Look, is it high school? Yeah," Hersh said. "Are we playing high school with you know 5,000 nuclear warheads in our arsenal? Yeah we are. We're playing, you know, who's the first guy to run off the highway with us and Iran."

    • Is there going to be a cyber equivelant of 9/11?

Lawrence Lessig, a respected Law Professor from Stanford University told an audience at this years Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference in Half Moon Bay, California, that “There’s going to be an i-9/11 event” which will act as a catalyst for a radical reworking of the law pertaining to the internet.

Lessig also revealed that he had learned, during a dinner with former government Counter Terrorism Czar Richard Clarke, that there is already in existence a cyber equivalent of the Patriot Act, an “i-Patriot Act” if you will, and that the Justice Department is waiting for a cyber terrorism event in order to implement its provisions.

During a group panel segment titled “2018: Life on the Net”, Lessig stated:

There’s going to be an i-9/11 event. Which doesn’t necessarily mean an Al Qaeda attack, it means an event where the instability or the insecurity of the internet becomes manifest during a malicious event which then inspires the government into a response. You’ve got to remember that after 9/11 the government drew up the Patriot Act within 20 days and it was passed.

The Patriot Act is huge and I remember someone asking a Justice Department official how did they write such a large statute so quickly, and of course the answer was that it has been sitting in the drawers of the Justice Department for the last 20 years waiting for the event where they would pull it out.

Of course, the Patriot Act is filled with all sorts of insanity about changing the way civil rights are protected, or not protected in this instance. So I was having dinner with Richard Clarke and I asked him if there is an equivalent, is there an i-Patriot Act just sitting waiting for some substantial event as an excuse to radically change the way the internet works. He said “of course there is”.

What do you all think about this? I'd say it's pretty practical, and this guy isn't just some conspiracy theorist raving on the net, he's a respected Law Professor who talked to DoJ officials and the like. Be sure to read the whole article. It is pretty informative.

    • Justice Department to squash online freedom with internet 9/11 event

Tech visionary Lawrence Lessig made a sobering prediction Tuesday at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference: “There’s going to be an i-9/11 event,” he said, “an event that demonstrates the instability of the Internet, and that inspires the government to a response.”

He said he believes this digital disaster – a major hacker attack or other act of cyber-terrorism in the next 10 years – will prompt the U.S. government to clamp down on Internet freedoms in an online parallel to the Patriot Act.

Stanford professor Lawrence Lessig predicts that an online attack will prompt the government to clamp down on Internet freedoms.

Lessig, a Stanford Law School professor who founded its Center for Internet and Society, said he came to this conclusion after a conversation with former federal counter-terrorism adviser Richard Clarke. Lessig said Clarke told him that the Justice Department had already written up much of the Patriot Act before the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and that there is a similar proposal on the shelf in case of an Internet catastrophe. Advocates of Internet openness will not be thrilled about its contents, Lessig said. “Vint Cerf is not going to like it very much,” Lessig recalls Clark saying.

The US authorities have charged 11 people in connection with the theft of credit-card details in the country's largest-ever identity theft case.

They are accused of stealing more than 40m credit and debit card numbers before selling the information.

They allegedly hacked into shop and bank computer systems using a technique known as "wardriving" and installed software to access the data.

Prosecutors said the alleged fraud was an "international conspiracy".

Three of those charged are US citizens. The others come from Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus and China.

The 11 suspects are alleged to have illegally obtained card numbers, account information and password details by driving around neighbourhoods and hacking into wireless equipment.

They are said to have then concealed the information in computer servers both in the US and Europe.

    • Sy Hersh: Cheney, Neocons considered killing US troops as pretext for Iran war

Sy Hersh casually admits that Cheney and his cabal brainstormed different ways to trigger yet another attack on a sovereign nation. One of the false flag incidents they considered was having Navy Seals kill a bunch of expendable US troops.

In an exclusive Think Progress story, we learn the meeting took place in Cheney’s office and the subject on the table was “how to create a casus belli between Tehran and Washington,” part of an ongoing effort to provide an excuse to attack Iran. “There was a dozen ideas proffered about how to trigger a war,” Hersh explains. “The one that interested me the most was why don’t we build — we in our shipyard — build four or five boats that look like Iranian PT boats. Put Navy seals on them with a lot of arms. And next time one of our boats goes to the Straits of Hormuz, start a shoot-up.”

According to Hersh, this meeting occurred after the neocons failed miserably to stage a rehashed version of the Gulf of Tonkin incident in the Strait of Hormuz, mostly because it is no longer 1964 and such Big Lies — thanks to the internet and bloggers — are far more difficult to float.

    • Bush to Attack Iran, Suspend Elections, and Declare Martial Law???

Nothing is official, but this article and video are very interesting and exactly what I've been saying for a long time.
Key Terms to look up: REX 84, FEMA, Playa NM, House Bill HR 1955/S - 1959, HR 4279, HR 8791, NS PD 51, HS PD 20... and plenty more

It didn’t make the news, at least not the corporate news. According to Bob Feuer, Bush will attack Iran, declare martial law, and suspend the election. Congress critter John Olver apparently made this claim at a town hall meeting at the Jones Library in Amherst, Massachusetts, last July. Feuer, a lawyer and political activist challenging Olver in the 1st Congressional District of Massachusetts, was at the town hall meeting with others to present Olver with resolutions to impeach Bush for war crimes when Olver made the comments. On July 5, 2007, the After Downing Street website posted Feuer’s retelling of the incident:

At about 10 am, the congressman came into the room with his aid, and Susie Patlove welcomed the congressman, laid out our agenda, and the congressman approved. We commenced with individual introductions and brief reports on the outcomes in each of our towns. Cong. Olver asked us to spare him a review of what he already knew and believed about the crimes of the Bush administration, and of the overwhelming majority of his district in favor of impeachment. When he aggrandized himself on his voting record, I took exception to 24 April 2007. When he asked what I was referring to, I challenged him to co-sponsor H. Res. 333; and he emphatically refused.

Nonetheless, we informed him of the good that would come out of an impeachment, and gave intelligent and caring answers to all of the objections he might harbor. We had present a young U.S. soldier, a veteran of both the Iraq and Afghanistan occupations, who directly asked the congressman what could we do to move him towards co-signing H. Res. 333. The congressman did not answer that direct question.

He is deeply concerned whether we will actually have an election in Nov. ‘08, as he believes this administration will likely strike Iran from the air, declare a national emergency, and cancel the ‘08 elections. He sees ending the war as his primary goal, and he believes the brilliant Nancy Pelosi [sic] has a strategy more potent than impeachment. He thinks impeachment is a futile waste of legislative energy, will be harmful of democratic ‘08 victories, and further tighten the “gridlock” he has complained of for the past few decades.

Olver would later deny he said this and would insist he was misquoted.

Not a word appeared in the corporate media, even though Olver has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1991. But then, of course, the corporate media is in bed with the neocons and wholly complicit in their plans to reduce Muslim and Arab countries to smoldering cinders. Last time around, neocon operative Judith Miller was allowed to publish all sorts of lies about Iraq in the “liberal” New York Times. Silence this time around should be expected.

Feuer’s claim is especially pertinent now as Dennis Kucinich attempts to get Bush impeached and rumblings about an attack against Iran pick up speed. The election is but a mere four months away and if Olver is correct — Bush will attack Iran, suspend the election, and declare martial law — this will have to go down in the next couple months or so. Bush and the neocons have installed their repressive legislation and directives — PDD51, the Military Commissions Act, and the John Warner Defense Authorization Act, all designed to silence the opposition and “enforce acquiescence at home,” as the Episcopal priest and activist Frank Morales notes.

Only time will tell if this scenario will actually occur. If it does, we can expect the corporate media to remain silent on the rendition of activists to those brand spanking new Halliburton concentration camps, as fascists always sweep up and do away with the opposition.
Nothing is official, but this article and video are very interesting and exactly what I've been saying for a long time. ... more
