    • 4 killed as explosion his southern Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — Authorities say a homemade bomb has exploded at a bus terminal in the southern Philippines, killing four people and injuring more than a dozen.

Regional police chief Andres Caro says Monday's blast targeted the bus terminal in Digos city in Davao del Sur province.

The explosion comes as government troops have been fighting Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels on the opposite side of the main southern region of Mindanao.

It is not clear if the blast is related to the government's offensive against the rebels.

The provincial hospital in Davao del Sur says four people died in the explosion and 21 were injured, some of them seriously.

    • Train explodes in Georgia

A train carrying fuel has exploded in Georgia after hitting a mine on the railway, days after Russian troops' withdrawal from the region.

The collision occurred west of the city of Gori which links South Ossetia with Tbilisi.

Gori was the scene of intense conflict recently, following a major Georgian offensive against South Ossetia on August 7, countered by Russia sending in armed convoys and military combat aircraft.

The situation is now under control, with the Russian military completely withdrawing its troops from Georgia on Friday, as specified in a French-brokered peace agreement.

Most South Ossetians hold Russian citizenship and favor unification with North Ossetia -- a Russian territory.

    • Explosions near Olympic venues go unreported

An explosion, within 50km of the Bird's Nest in Beijing, resulted in 20 people being sent to hospital on 17 Aug., the Hong Kong Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy confirms.

The explosion involved a goods truck that was being inspected at a police checkpoint near the White Temple in Beijing at the time, the Centre said.

The Hong Kong Information Centre have since confirmed with White Temple staff and police that the incident occured, although all have refused to comment. The White Cloud Temple is a security checkpoint for vehicles entering Beijing.
Since the explosion, reports from eye witnesses who were on the bus have been removed from blog sites on China's official search engine Baidu.

This is the latest in series of possible attacks that Chinese officials have failed to make public.

The first fatal incident happened on August 13, reported the Hong Kong Information Centre.

According to available information, a bomb was detonated in a building at the Qinhuangdao economic and technological development zone, killing two people. While Chinese authorities refused to comment on the event, mortuary staff confirmed that the victims worked for the Changpu company.

Beijing Olympic organizers said that the explosion was caused by production activities and was not related to a terrorist act.

Other suspected terrorist incidents in Qinhuangdao have also gone unreported says the Information Centre. On July 9, Yanshan University in Qinhuangdao dismissed students for vacation ahead of schedule because of a bomb scare.

On August 4, authorities then discovered an explosive device in Qinhuangdao Stadium, the site of 12 Olympic football matches. The Information Center said that authorities very worried because the stadium had already been checked by security and the bomb was discovered underneath a seat after that check.

Qinhuangdao is located approximately 150 km from Beijing and is considered a sensitive zone because it is a popular resort area for retired Communist Party leaders.

    • Menem probed over 1995 explosion

Argentina's former president, Carlos Menem, has been placed under investigation over his alleged role in a deadly explosion in 1995.

Prosecutors say Mr Menem was responsible for the blast that killed seven people at an arsenal. They allege Mr Menem was trying to cover up proof of illegal arms trafficking to Ecuador and Croatia in the 1990s. Mr Menem, president from 1989 to 1999, denies the charges. The blast took place in the city of Rio Tercero and also injured 300 people. About 19,000 residents had to be evacuated.

Argentine police have also raided the offices of the German firm Siemens over alleged bribes that were paid to win contracts in the 1990s. Documents and computers were seized. Siemens won a contract for national identity cards in 1998 but the order was withdrawn by Mr Menem's successor. The company has said it is investigating certain payments on its books.

Mr Menem, 78, was last year charged with involvement in the illegal sale of weapons to Croatia and Ecuador. His 10 years in office were dogged by a string of alleged and proven corruption scandals.

    • BMW spontaneous combustion

Newspapers in Guangzhou, China today reported that a BMW car burst into flames and exploded on the road yesterday in Baiyun district. The family of four who were in the car managed to escape without injury. Interestingly, this seems like a not uncommon incident, since Danwei reports that "Googling 'BMW spontaneous combustion' brings up 57,500 results. Judging by the search results, there have been quite a few similar incidences reported in different cities in China."

I remember hearing about several very similar incidents earlier this year, but all in China - are BMW flogging off unsafe wares in Asia? Or is something else going on?

    • Residents flee Toronto explosion

Thousands of people have been evacuated following an explosion at a propane gas plant in the north of the Canadian city of Toronto.

A two-mile (3.2km) exclusion zone was set up and police ordered residents of the Keele and Wilson areas to leave their homes. The series of explosions at 0350 local time (0850 BST) on Sunday also shut down one the city's busiest highways. Police say no-one was seriously injured in the incident.

Witnesses described the sky lighting up in the glow of an enormous fireball before turning black with smoke, and some residents said the blast caused their houses to rock. "It was just a tremendous explosion and blew all the windows out of the house. I just managed to get out of there in time," local resident Robert Helman told the Associated Press news agency. Firefighters battled the blazes at the Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases facility for several hours. Toronto fire services division commander Bob O'Hallarn said that firefighters were close to extinguishing all the burning tanks, significantly reducing the risk of another explosion. "I think we were very lucky," he said. "There was a very large of amount of fire when we arrived. It could have been much more serious." Mr O'Hallarn said he saw at least five badly damaged houses, adding that it could be hours before residents are allowed back to their homes.

    • Thousands forced from homes after Toronto explosions

TORONTO (Reuters) - A series of explosions at a Toronto propane depot sent balls of flame soaring into the sky on Sunday and forced thousands of people from their homes.

One person was "unaccounted for," but officials were mostly relieved that the early morning explosion apparently caused only minor injuries -- eight people were treated in hospital.

The predawn explosions shattered doors and windows in nearby houses and sent a truck-sized propane tank blasting through the air to land in a business area some 100 yards (metres) away.

With fires still burning at the facility, police ordered people within a one-mile (1.6-km) radius to leave their homes, fearful that two large tanks of propane could still explode. By noon that danger had eased, although police could not say when the evacuation would end.

"Big balls of fire were falling down," resident Tony Testa told CP-24 Television. "I thought I was going to die. It was unbelievable. The house shifted. The front door -- it's a solid wooden door -- it's in pieces."

Amateur video on Canadian television channels showed an orange glow that rapidly grew into a fireball and then into billowing clouds of flames and smoke.

Fire officials said they focused on ensuring the site was safe and that the propane tanks were kept cool and vented.

Several thousand people, some of them elderly, live in the area, which is to the northwest of Toronto's city center.

The explosions also closed a 10-mile (16-km) stretch of one of Canada's busiest highways, the 401 expressway.

    • 'Tank exploded' on Qantas jet

An exploding oxygen cylinder was the probable cause of a hole in a Qantas jet which was forced into an emergency landing, a safety official confirmed.

Julian Walsh, of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, said it appeared parts of the tank had exploded through the passenger cabin floor.

The plane, which was flying from London to Melbourne, was forced to land in the Philippines on Friday.

Passengers reported a loud bang and then rapid decompression of the cabin.

Pilots were forced to descend rapidly by almost 20,000ft (6,100m), but none of the 365 passengers and crew was hurt in the incident.

"The ATSB can confirm that it appears that part of an oxygen cylinder and valve entered the passenger cabin," Mr Walsh told reporters.

He said shrapnel from the tank sheared off part of a door handle, but added that the design of the door prevented it from opening in mid-air.

Analysts had already speculated that an oxygen tank was to blame for causing the hole in the jet's fuselage.

Qantas has been told to inspect every cylinder on its Boeing 747 fleet.

I always wondered when something like this would happen. Those fumes are flammable.

A New Jersey man trying to exterminate insects in his apartment blew it up instead, the New York Daily News reported on Monday.

Isias Vidal Maceda was unhurt in the incident, but 80 percent of his apartment was destroyed, Eatontown, New Jersey police told the newspaper.

The accident occurred as Maceda was spraying for pests in his kitchen. Somehow the bug spray ignited a blast that blew out the apartment's front windows and triggered a fire that quickly spread, the newspaper said.

Two buses have exploded, killing 2 and injuring 14, in the city of Kunming in Southwestern China. The buses exploded about an hour apart from each other, followed by a third, unconfirmed, explosion (reported by Reuters) in the vicinity of Mianshan. Though the local police and authorities have yet to comment, it is thought that the blasts are linked to the violent clash between farmers and police at a rubber plant in southern Yunnan's Menglian on Saturday in which two farmers were killed and 54 people – including 41 police – were injured.
