Hitler's Pope? Pope Benedict said on Thursday he hoped his Nazi-era predecessor Pius XII, who some Jews have accused of turning a blind eye to the Holocaust, can proceed on the road to Roman Catholic sainthood. Benedict said he prayed the process leading to Pius' beatification, the last step before sainthood, "can proceed happily." Hitler's Pope? Hitler's rise to power was based on "normal voting behaviour" accor...
Long viewed as a unique aberration of history, Adolf Hitler's rise to power can partly be put down to "normal voting behaviour", a Zurich University study has shown.
But researchers demonstrate that the voters most hurt by the depression, and most likely to oppose the government, were a disparate group who did not uniformly turn to the Nazis.
"The consequences of Hitler's election were extraordinary," the authors say, "but the voting behaviour that led to it was not."
Because of the unprecedented circumstances in which free and fair democratic elections led to the antidemocratic National Socialist Party winning control of the Weimar Republic, the question of who voted for Hitler has become the most studied in the history of voting behaviour research.
The latest study, a Swiss-US collaboration between a social scientist, statistician, mathematician and economist, sets out to discover who had an interest, specifically an economic interest, in voting for Hitler.
There is a vast existing body of literature on why the German people - eventually 38.7 per cent of the electorate in 1933 - voted for the Austrian.
Not unique
Professor Alexander Wagner of Zurich University's Swiss Banking Institute said the research team decided not to treat the elections between 1924 and 1932 as unique, in contrast to previous academic literature.
"We began with the notion that these were elections like any other. So we started with an economic explanation. We looked at all the elections and all the parties together in a statistical way," he told swissinfo.
In more than 70 years of research almost every social group has been blamed for having backed Hitler at the ballot box, and indeed support for the party was spread across the social spectrum.
However this study, published in the Journal of Economic History, identifies a set of people – "the working poor" – who stood to benefit most from Nazi policies. It also confirms that they voted proportionally more for the Nazis.
The group includes the self-employed, typically small shopkeepers, farmers and artisans, farm labourers and domestic servants, but excludes the unemployed and factory workers.
Rural labourers, domestic servants and family members helping relatives are significant groups that have been completely overlooked by previous literature, according to Wagner and his colleagues.
"We have the best data on that group and were able to look at their behaviour," he said.
« The unemployed voted proportionally less for the National Socialists and proportionally more for the communists. »
Hard times
Unlike industrial workers, these rural and domestic workers had no social security net in the form of unemployment insurance. Likewise, small shopkeepers did not officially become unemployed - they just made less money.
Therefore these groups did not have any stake in the government's unemployment policies and were more drawn to the free enterprise promises of the Nazis.
"That was our hypothesis: that blue-collar workers and the unemployed would regard either the government or the communists, who were for expropriation, as the party to vote for. Indeed, we found support for that."
------------more@link--------------pretty chilling finding I may say. If this is true, America will have to be careful of any potential new leader. We do not need another Hitler in this world. Congress decides it is worth risking depression
It is just over three score years and ten since the Great Depression. Judged by its rejection of the plan put forward by Hank Paulson, US Treasury secretary, Congress believes it is time to risk another one.
That slump was, arguably, the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century: it was, among other things, responsible for the events that led to the second world war – not least Hitler’s rise. One can only imagine what horrors a depression might bring now?
Such forebodings must seem exaggerated. So, I expect, they will be. But that dire outcome is no longer impossible, not because a slump is inevitable, far from it, but because action is needed to prevent one.
We are watching the disintegration of the financial system. Finance is the web of intermediation binding economic agents to one another, across both space and time. Without it, no modern economy can survive. Yet that is now threatened, with the ongoing collapse in trust and flight to safety. We can indeed run this experiment. But why should we?
Even before Congress rejected the plan, the spread in dollars between the London interbank offered rate and expected official rates (as shown in overnight indexed swaps) had reached more than 200 basis points, for a period as short as three months. Prior to the start of the crisis in August 2007, the spread was negligible. (See chart.) Nor is this all: on Monday short-term yields on Treasury bills were below 1 per cent; credit default swap spreads on financial institutions reached exceptional levels and credit spreads on riskier bonds were widening rapidly. In the aftermath of the plan’s rejection, all this was likely to worsen. The S&P 500 also fell by 8.8 per cent on Monday, its worst day since October 19 1987. Nothing can better demonstrate how absurd it is to believe one can punish Wall Street without hurting Main Street. The two streets meet. That is what streets do. It is just over three score years and ten since the Great Depression. Judged by its rejection of the plan put forward by Hank Paulson,... more -

Here's a heartwarming sight: a children's choir from Venice, California, joining together to sing about how much they love Barack Obama. Did I say heartwarming? Actually, I meant terrifying — almost indescribably terrifying. If Obama wins the election, all American citizens will be required to gather in local parks at 6am each morning to serenade their leader in this fashion. Don't say you weren't warned. Brzezinski Clan Color Revolution
http://www.gnosticliberationfront.com/brzezinski_clan__...
In 2008, we have an obscure Illinois senator, a neophyte with no legislative achievements to speak of and no track record of courage or principle, who has evidently been groomed by the deans of the Democratic Party establishment. A new raft of utopian promises are floated: the race problem in America and its attendant collective guilt will be expunged with a single vote. The clash of contending interests in Washington DC will be replaced by a magically harmonious bi-partisan and non-partisan cooperation. The bitterness of the clash derives from real conditions, and especially from the fact that the economic pie has shrunk to such a point that the traditional demands of the various ruling class factions can no longer be fulfilled, leading to life boat ethics in the elite itself, as some groups must necessarily be shut out completely. But no matter: a golden age and the earthly paradise are proclaimed by the pundits to be at hand, thanks to the magnetic personality of the new purveyor of platitudes. Even on the surface, the new leader caters to the overclass and exhibits a studied indifference to the concerns of black ghetto victims and the oppressed poor of all races, but this callousness is re-defined as post-partisan, trans-racial, and global. But since he knows nothing of foreign policy, these matters will be managed by the Brzezinski cabal, which brings with it yet another set of fantasies of world renovation and social engineering, but still directed at preserving US-UK world domination. At the heart of the new fantasies is the desire to eliminate Russia and Putin as a factor capable of contesting Anglo-American hegemony. The potential for catastrophe here is if anything even greater than the perils of neocon meddling among the Arabs and Moslems.
If they are to survive much longer, the American people need to become far more skeptical and critical in their evaluation of political candidates. They need to finally invalidate P.T. Barnum's famous dictum about suckers and how there is one born every minute. They need to radically reform their own set of political criteria of judgment. Have they learned anything from their disastrous choices of recent decades? Many of them voted for Nixon, Carter, and the Bushes, to name just a few failed presidents. Have they learned anything from their own colossal folly? Are they ready to repeat their own tragic gullibility with Obama, or with some other demagogue? The failure of the New Hampshire people power coup gives them an opportunity to reflect and hopefully learn something. 'Valkyrie' Trailer is Good Enough to KILL HITLER
Oh, Bryan Singer's beleaguered Valkyrie. From multiple release date changes, to trouble with Germany, to rumors of doctoring historical photos, this movie has been plagued with setbacks and bad press for a long time. With equal parts curiosity and trepidation, I awaited a real trailer for the film, which is now opening Dec. 26. Now that the trailer is here, it looks better than I expected.
Visually, I love the look of this movie so far. Singer directed The Usual Suspects (and X-Men, Superman Begins and X2), and with Valkyrie it appears that he has again captured an eerie, ominous tone. What isn't working for me is Tom Cruise whom I simply don't find believable in this role (the list of supporting actors, however, is promising: Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard, Kenneth Branagh, and more). Cruise plays a high-ranking German officer (with an American accent . . ?) who plots to assassinate Hitler during the height of WWII. The code name for the assassination plan is "Valkyrie." Beheaded wax Hitler returns looking more dishevelled
Nine weeks after a visitor tore off the dictator's head, Madame Tussauds has repaired its wax figure of Adolf Hitler and put him back on display in Berlin. The new Hitler is protected by a thick wall, glass and two security guards to prevent a new assassination attempt. In addition, he looks even more dishevelled than the original figure.
Madame Tussauds had defied criticism that it was tasteless and inappropriate to display the figure of a man who caused so much suffering. A spokesperson stated: "Madame Tussauds is apolitical and neither comments on nor judges the people shown in the exhibition or what they did in the course of their life. The figures are selected according to their popularity or their significance in having a decisive impact on history, be that good or bad. Adolf Hitler represents a decisive part of Berlin's history that cannot be denied."
Interestingly, the appearance of the new figure has been changed slightly to make him seem even more pathetic. Hitler's hair is more dishevelled than before and his tie is loosened around his collar. He's also shown looking down rather than straight ahead, and the huge map of Europe has been removed from the wall next to him. Tunnels show Hitler's megalomaniac vision
"Three vast tunnels were opened under central Berlin this month, giving a glimpse of Adolf Hitler's megalomaniac vision of a new architectural centre for the capital of Nazi Germany.
The 16-metre (50-foot) deep tunnels were constructed in 1938 as part of an underground transport network beneath a series of bombastic buildings designed by Nazi architect Albert Speer, including the biggest domed hall the world had ever seen.
The overground plans, never completed because of World War Two, included boulevards, squares and huge buildings, such as an arch dwarfing the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the 290-metre high Great Hall, with room for 180,000 people.
Hitler called the concept, a symbol of the power of the Third Reich, "Berlin -- the capital of the world" but in recent times it has come to be known as "Germania."
The tunnels, between 90 and 220 meters long lying beneath the Tiergarten park, would have accommodated roads and a railway line.
"The tunnels -- which are in surprisingly good condition -- were part of Speer's grand plans, what we now call 'Germania'," historian Dietmar Arnold, head of the Berlin Underground Association and bunker tour guide, told Reuters." Hitlers tunnels open showing his megalomaniac vision
BERLIN (Reuters) - Three vast tunnels were opened under central Berlin this month, giving a glimpse of Adolf Hitler's megalomaniac vision of a new architectural centre for the capital of Nazi Germany.

The tunnels, between 90 and 220 meters long lying beneath the Tiergarten park, would have accommodated roads and a railway line.
"The tunnels -- which are in surprisingly good condition -- were part of Speer's grand plans, what we now call 'Germania'," historian Dietmar Arnold, head of the Berlin Underground Association and bunker tour guide, told Reuters.
Last week, Arnold -- who runs an exhibition of Hitler's plans -- took journalists on a rare visit into the dank tunnels.
They are closed to the public most of the time because of safety concerns, but visits can be arranged.
"The acoustics are incredible," said Arnold, who likes singing a note and hearing it reverberate around him.
After the war, British forces in divided Berlin closed the tunnels. They were rediscovered in 1969 but have remained shut. In 1990, a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, they were handed to the city of Berlin.
The Berlin Underground Association, set up in 1997, has seen a surge in interest in tours of Berlin's remaining bunkers.
Although most were destroyed, some of the maze of 1,000 World War Two bunkers are intact and serve as a reminder of the city's violent history.
Propaganda posters and escape instructions on the walls convey a sense of the past. In one bunker, suitcases, helmets, and uniforms from various sites are on show.
"Interest is constantly growing -- we have about 150,000 visitors a year to the bunkers," said Arnold. "That is partly why we want the bunkers to be protected -- they are an important part of the history of Berlin."
By the end of the war, Germany's most heavily bombed city could protect up to 800,000 people in its bunkers. BERLIN (Reuters) - Three vast tunnels were opened under central Berlin this month, giving a glimpse of Adolf Hitler's megalomania... more -
McCain blasts Madonna over 'outrageous' Hitler comparison
Hmmm, this probably did more good for the McCain camp...
John McCain's campaign hit back at Madonna on Sunday after the pop diva began her world tour with a concert that bracketed the US presidential candidate with Adolf Hitler.
McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds angrily condemned the segment of Madonna's concert in Cardiff, Wales, that appeared to draw a comparison between McCain, Hitler and Zimbabwean strongman Robert Mugabe.
"The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time," Bounds said in a statement reported by Fox News.
"It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits."
Madonna's apparent swipe at McCain came during a performance of the song Get Stupid, when the Republican contender's image was flashed up alongside images of destruction and global warming and of Hitler and Mugabe.
Towards the end of the song, pictures of Beatles star John Lennon, former US vice-president Al Gore, Indian Mahatma Gandhi and McCain's Democrat rival Barack Obama appeared. Hmmm, this probably did more good for the McCain camp... ... more -

The 'Jewish Hitler': Nazi-descendant lives in Israel as Orthodox Jew
In Jewish circles, the term 'penitents' is sometimes used to describe children of Nazis who become Jews to try to expiate the sins of their fathers. According to this article, a subculture of Nazi-descended Jews exists in Israel, where even a relative of Adolf Hitler himself now lives as an Orthodox Jew.
The Jewish Hitler-relative, who wishes to remain anonymous, works as a professor at the Jewish studies faculty at one of the universities in Israel. He is a descendant of Hitler's half-brother, Alois Junior, but stresses that he does not have any blood or DNA from the Hitler branch of his family. According to him, his mother severed all connections with the Hitlers and was beaten for refusing to go to Hitler Youth events as a teenager. His father, on the other hand, was a major in the Wehrmacht and therefore, barring a miracle, killed people for Hitler.

Hitler's private collection goes virtual
A musuem in Berlin has put the legendary Linz Collection, Hitler's private collection of art, online. It may be the first time since World War II that the all the pieces have been assembled in one place.
Adolf Hitler's notorious "Linz Collection" -- a private collection of art displayed in Linz and then stashed in salt mines at the end of World War II -- has now been put online in digital form by the German Historical Musem, not for casual viewing but to help track the provenance of some pieces.
The Führer's taste ran to bucolic idylls and precious German Romanticism, in particular 19th century painters from Vienna and Munich. He ignored, famously, "degenerate" art by realistic or socially biting artists -- among them the mightiest names of the 20th century -- but he managed to assemble a large and not insignificant private collection.
He wanted to use the art as the kernel of a large "Führermuseum," which he hoped to build in Linz, Austria, by 1950. For two years before 1945 some art was displayed in Linz, where the Austrian-born Hitler spent part of his youth. Hitler's foundation to support the museum was called the Sonderauftrag Linz, or "Special Project: Linz," and financed by proceeds from his book, Mein Kampf.

Man draws Hitler moustache and swastika on children in holiday camp
Three children in a holiday camp in east Germany had Hitler moustaches drawn on their faces and Nazi swastikas painted on their bodies by a 20-year-old man, who is now facing criminal charges.
The man confessed to police but there was no indication that his behavior was politically motivated, a police spokesman for the Oberlausitz region of eastern Germany said. According to him, he was merely acting out of "mischief and stupidity".
Media reports said parents of one of the children had filed a legal complaint on Saturday when they saw their child. The man didn't work in the holiday camp but was able to access it because he knew one of the staff there.
The man now faces charges of trespassing and police are also investigating him for using illegal symbols. Nazi symbols such as the swastika is illegal in Germany.
