    • 12-year-old Revolutionizes the Solar Cell

William Yuan, a seventh-grader from Portland, OR, developed a three-dimensional solar cell that absorbs UV as well as visible light. The combination of the two might greatly improve cell efficiency. William's project earned him a $25,000 scholarship and a trip to the Library of Congress to accept the award, which is usually given out for research at the graduate level.

“Current solar cells are flat and can only absorb visible light,” he said. “I came up with an innovative solar cell that absorbs both visible and UV light. My project focused on finding the optimum solar cell to further increase the light absorption and efficiency and design a nanotube for light-electricity conversion efficiency.”

You know, that's just what I was thinking when I was 12, but my idea didn't quite work. Well, it was just a paper towel roll with "Solar Rays" written on the side in Sharpie, and I tried to use it to melt G.I. Joe figures. But still. Well done, William!

    • Condé Nast to launch Wired in the UK and Italy

"Condé Nast will launch a UK version of Wired magazine and its accompanying website next year and has hired the Jewish Chronicle's editor, David Rowan, to edit it.

The UK debut issue of the monthly technology magazine will arrive on newsstands in the first half of 2009.

Guardian Media Group previously tied up with Wired for a short-lived UK version of the magazine in the mid-1990s.

The publisher will also launch a version of Wired in Italy early next year, prior to the UK launch."

I can't wait to read the Wired in Italian, but was a British version necessary?

'The End Is Nigh' and 'We're All Doomed', right? Ever wonder if that's just a state of mind, or even a self fulfilling prophesy? Just a thought -

'When contemplating the world's environmental problems, it's sometimes hard not to feel like humanity is screwed. But then you attend an event like Future Cities, a panel of sustainability experts held last night at the World Science Festival, and it seems like we might just figure out how to thrive on this planet after all.'

    • Life, death and Twitter on the African Savannah

For veteran wildlife ranger Joseph Kimojino, the traditional tools of his trade -- binoculars, off-road jeep and a rifle -- have been supplemented by Twitter, Flickr and a blog.

A ranger in Kenya's acclaimed Mara Triangle wildlife park, Kimojino is a member of the Masai tribe. He first learned how to click a computer mouse in November. Now he blogs about the Mara Triangle and posts wild animal photos on Flickr nearly every day.

Kimojino's online outreach is an effort to raise awareness and money for the park, and it's urgent: Without the funds he raises online, his employer, the Mara Conservancy, would go broke. Admission fees from park visitors are the conservancy's primary source of revenue, but tourism dropped to almost zero during Kenya's post-election violence, and hasn't snapped back.

But the park's online efforts are working. Despite relatively modest traffic, the blog raised $40,000 from donations in March. Kimojino's Facebook page drew about $2,000; and a handful of safari companies bought advertising on the blog in exchange for sponsoring rangers.

"All the rest has been from single donations from individuals around the world, from donations as small as $5 to our biggest, which was $5,000," says William Deed, the experienced blogger behind the park's online outreach effort.

Kenya's wildlife is seriously threatened by poaching, except in parks like the Mara Triangle, which employs rangers to protect animals. The rangers' salaries are paid from park fees, but tourism has dropped 90 percent. To keep the conservancy running, the park's online outreach needs to raise $50,000 a month until the tourists return -- a job that's fallen into Deed's lap.

Two years ago, Deed, 28, was an office temp in Rotherham, England, "a really shitty, shitty town near Sheffield," he says. Deed was so bored with his lot, he started a blog about the banalities of waiting in line.

The blog became popular, and within months, Deed was recruited by the conservationist blog network WildlifeDirect, brainchild of famed Kenyan conservationist Richard Leakey and his son-in-law, Emmanuel De Merode.

Deed's assignment: Help wildlife rangers set up blogs about mountain gorillas and other animals in the Congolese guerrilla stronghold of North Kivu.

Eastern Congo was much less boring than Rotherham, Deed found. After surviving more than a dozen evacuations and being ultimately driven out of the park by Laurent Nkunda's rebels, Deed found a more peaceful but no less adventurous assignment with the Mara Conservancy.

    • Rethink What It Means to Be Green

Wired Magazine gives us 10 solutions that can help fight climate change. These solutions are things people thought wouldn't work.

      10 GREEN HERESIES

      LIVE IN CITIES:
Urban Living Is Kinder to the Planet Than the Suburban Lifestyle because less people own cars, more people use alternative means to get around, and large apartment buildings are the most efficient dwellings to heat and cool.

      A/C IS OK:
Air-Conditioning Actually Emits Less C02 Than Heating. It takes less energy to cool a given space by 1 degree than to heat it by the same amount. Then how come there are so many blackouts during summer?

      ORGANICS ARE NOT THE ANSWER:
Surprise! Conventional Agriculture Can Be Easier on the Planet. A single organically raised cow puts out 16 percent more greenhouse gases than an industrial one. Organic vegetables aren't that much better.

      FARM THE FORESTS:
Old-Growth Forests Can Actually Contribute to Global Warming. There comes a time in every tree's life when they start taking in less C02 and emit more, so plant new trees lots of them.

      CHINA IS THE SOLUTION:
The People's Republic Leads the Way in Alternative-Energy Hardware. China is the number one dealer in alternative-energy hardware and yet they have a lot of coal power plants. Hypocrites!

      ACCEPT GENETIC ENGINEERING:
Superefficient Frankencrops Could Put a Real Dent in Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Genomics experts have been optimizing food crops for decades, punching in traits for lower herbicide use, less tilling, and higher yields — carbon cutters.

      CARBON TRADING DOESN'T WORK:
Carbon Credits Were a Great Idea, But the Benefits Are Illusory. Instead of reducing our own carbon emissions, we'll pay other people to reduce theirs! No gains there.

      EMBRACE NUCLEAR POWER:
Face It. Nukes Are the Most Climate-Friendly Industrial-Scale Form of Energy. Coal-fired power plants release 520 times more atmospheric carbon per megawatt-hour than Nuclear Power. But don't forget about other alternative energies, such as solar power and wind power.

      USED CARS — NOT HYBRIDS:
Don't Buy That New Prius! Test-Drive a Used Car Instead. Building a Prius contributes more carbon to the atmosphere than building a Hummer and driving a Prius won't make up for that for a long time.

      PREPARE FOR THE WORST:
Climate Change Is Inevitable. Get Used to It. We're not all going to die, but we will have to adapted a little to a warmer planet. Hopefully it won't be that bad if we change our ways.

Be sure and read the counter point for this story.

    • The clearest source of energy you've never imagined

The energy source that was (literally) under my nose as a 7-year old burning birch bark by redirecting a carefully-focussed stream of the sun's energy through a magnifying glass: *solar thermal energy*, duh...

And what's better, these engineers have perked the ears of the companies that help fuel the innovators of the world--the venture capital investors--to get behind the emerging technology.

It's not widely proven yet (besides every day as ants are 'torchered' by 7-year olds with magnifying glasses), but with the biggest VC firms and Google.org behind this one, they'll be able to give it a good run to prove viability. I'll be watching--wide-eyed.

Check out this article, and do your clean energy dance for this one (then post the video, pls. ; )

    • iPhone 'security' is code for 'control'

Apple isn't sorry that your iphone is "bricked." You can't install unapproved third-party apps; you can't unlock it and use a carrier of your choice; and if you do, you might break it. And it's all in the name of their bottom line. So why don't they just call it 'control' in the first place? Because would you really buy a phone that said "including all the latest features so Apple can control your phone!" right on the box? Not likely. Apple isn't sorry that your iphone is "bricked." You have a blog. You compose a new post. You click Publish and lean back to admire your work. Imperceptibly and all but instantaneously, your post slips into a vast and recursive network of software agents, where it is crawled, indexed, mined, scraped, republished, and propagated throughout the Web. Within minutes, if you've written about a timely and noteworthy topic, a small army of bots will get the word out to anyone remotely interested, from fellow bloggers to corporate marketers.
